No this is a good thing, we all need excitement :D

  • Fay, my new boss also has a thing about remote bits of Scotland - he's one of the few people who I've met who understands how focussed you get on remembering everything at the shops when you have a ten mile round trip (at least) if you need a pint of milk, oh, and if it's after about 7pm you'll have to do without anyway as the shop will be shut! :D When we were talking about this at work in the week the rest of them were just looking at us as though we were mad - you could see them thinking "Well, that's daft - you can always pop along to the petrol station after all!" :rotfl:

I love the non 24/7 aspect of life up here - I don't like that side of things on the mainland as I'm inherently indulgent and very lazy..........

Ok I was moaning about the solicitors but I do liek it that things shut here and are not open over weekends.

DD is laughing at me - I have counted 32 litres of milk in the big freezer and about 18 loaves of bread - I bought more reduced milk today

SHe thinks I'm insane - but loves the fact that we stock pile

And this house is remote enough to justify stockpiling - I'll be like a pig in heaven

I like the sound of your boss!!

    PS how's the cake?

Sneaked over to have a look at the house, my word it's lovely. I'd love to be that isolated/peaceful - good luck next week with it!

If I lived somewhere like that I would be a little compulsively stockpiling away!

Hope it has a large stockplie cupboard/larder to use.

Oh well back to the city for me!

Well if I get it - I'm certainly going to need some visitors.............:D

I'll potentially have a 'two house cross over' for a couple of months :o

Thank goodness for lodgers - that should cover the rent in this house.

Speechless - which isnt like me! I love it, you will be so lucky. I hope that you get it.
My OH doesn't come from Orkney but he did move there to live in 1998. He only managed to stay for 3 years before being forced to move to Wales for personal reasons. He lived in Kirkwall but talks about the whole Island with great fondness. I think he used to take himself off around the island in his landrover on adventures. he tells me that he nearly managed to buy a croft house but was pipped at the post. He used to be part of the sailing club and from all accounts had an amazing life there.
I moved to Wales to be with him last year and I LOVE the fact that the village shop and garage close at 7 and unless I drive for miles I cannot just pop to the shop. My friends are real townies and never believed how I would settle to life in the country. I just think we are not as remote as I would love to be.
    Good luck

  • Cake is made and looking delicious!! I made an ordinary Victoria Sponge but using the "weight only" method where you weigh your eggs, then match the weights of each of the other ingredients to those. First time I've tried it - I usually use the straight 4oz flour 4oz sugar 4oz butter/marge and 2 x eggs recipe. I also added a teaspoonful of Vanilla to this one. It's now sitting in the fridge having been filled with my mother in law's delicious white peach jam (and there is enough left in the jar to have on toast tomorrow morning - hurrah!) and some fresh cream. It's almost more of a gateaux than a cake!

I know precisely what you mean about the non 24/7 thing. It drives me mad here that people feel that they "need" Tesco's to be open at 2am or on a Sunday. I appreciate that for people who work shifts it makes life easier, but what they seem to forget is that shift work tends to carry a financial premium for just those reasons, and when life is the same whether your "day time" is in hours of daylight or those of darkness, they will risk losing that premium.

Hello - have you tried adding bleach in the machine - I'm not sure black mould shifts for much

Its not so cold all the time here - and if I get that house - we can just watch the world through triple glazing!!

    :)
