Slugs and snails, put out dry bran - they love it then they explode once the bran starts to expand - evil but fitting

All this talk of slugs and snails....when can we get past those and the puppy dog tails and move on to sugar, spice and all things nice? :)

I hate slugs but can't kill them, can't kill anything, the occasional wasp but I always feel so guilty, they haven't asked to be a loathsome creature after all......but get overrun in the garden with the flipping things. Would they "enjoy" drowning in beer do you think? Is that the least inhumane way of getting rid of them? Maybe there's a slug sanctuary around somewhere that I could take them to....

I'd love to grow veg and things. When I was a kid I used to grow a different thing each year. I was into different veg so tried out okra, kohl rabi and my fave - white beetroot - tasted exactly the same but without the colour!

I know a few people who have allotments and maybe one day I'll be able to get one of my own! They are in high demand round here though.

I also love the idea of having bees as well......

Ooooh I've got white beetroot seeds to try this year... in my little backyard container garden, still in flat while dreaming of Good Life type suburban self sufficiency... :A Also trying interesting things like Mizuna and Cima di Rapa (green stuff that you can use as salad or cooked greens).. Japanese Kale.. and something which is like broccoli but actually part of turnip family. Should be interesting - all are meant to have a long growing season and be cold resistant, can be planted now - supposedly - but waiting for the snow to clear!

Fay, I am drooling at the thought of Orkney steak, even at 10.30am... yummmm....

  • Todays update

Nothing much to report really!! Got some meat from local butchers to go with the swag from Mt T.

Done loads and loads and loads of cooking
Sour milk used in the scones - there were 20 there are now 4 - I guess they were OK
Bolognese made (half mince, half soya mince -) in a humungous pot - used whoopsied tomatoes as well so I have about a gallon of the stuff to freexe or put into chilli, lasnge etc - wonder if they will notice?????
Also used the new sproutings from the onion stalks from the green bits growing the glass house - as I was low on onions looks grand and tastes great

Chicken is about to go in oven for tea later on OH on his way so we are having roasty dinner tonight I think but will see.

Have made turkey curry pie - whoopsied pastry (11p) and the leftover curry from the freezer - bit random but it tastes ok - I thought I was getting out chicken stew (Piq will laugh) I don't label things in the freezer relying on my psycic ? psycotic? ability to 'know' what it is - whooopes

Feeling all fluffy and homey - baking makes me feel nice and cos I am nervous about the introdcution I handed in then I needed to distract myself.

    Bedroom tidied and bed made

Need go and get changed and pick up OH from ferry - maybe have a wander around Stromness cos its so beautiful - calling in half way through to fling DD pal out at her mums and will have a nice cuppa - not seen her mum for ages

Cleaner has been (I know its so naughty - I swapped my wine consumption for a cleaner :D - I get healthier and we no longer live is squallor - well for a day or so anyway)

Funds in bank are OK - have moved DD's to one day in one account as it let me - but my lloyds account doesnt let you do that online so will have to write to them.

Waving to you all - catch up in a bit after I (attempt) to look half way human.

    :D

Most fluffy organic gardeners (I do have a fluffy organic side honest) will agree that beer is probably the most human way of disposing with them or catching them in half a grapefruit or something similar.

If you don't want to kill them, then collect them and release them somewhere else - I tend to release mine into the chicken cages.

Whatever anyone tells you a bird table is NOT a suitable slug sanctuary.

YOu can always plant stuff they love or put in an area of stuff you really dont want to eat and let them browse there - but you can almost guarantee that they will find there way back to where you don't want them.

Copper rings work to keep them out - they don't like them, as does grit and egg shells. If you find a suitable area you dont mind your slugs - what about them outlinining the area with some kind of slug barrier and then you can put the slugs in the patch (AKA slug sanctuary) and they prob won't be able to easily escape?
    Goodluck!!
