The revenge of the stripey socks - a DFW adventure

I don't know if this is helpful advice or not - I'm certainly not of a PhD type.....
however I have had to change my writing style quite a few times depending on my job ( I worked in insurance for a while so got to use technical language for that - also good practice in writing things in a 'water-tight' fashion) I now work in the Public sector so have to tailor a lot of things I write for people for whom English is a second language or who may not have high literacy skills.
I have found that reading similar things very helpful. I have often 'stolen' good phrases or ways of putting things to use in my letters. It also helps to find examples of 'how not to do it'.
I know you don't have a lot of spare time but would reading other scientific papers help? Not necessarily on willows but I would have thought that anything in a similar field would have good styles that you can use. I don't necessarily mean copy as I think it is important for your 'voice' to come through but it might help in getting closer to writing in the style they require.
Could your tutors provide examples of good writing that they are particularly impressed with to help you???
Sorry if this isn't helpful information, I would also like to think that having strong research and sound scientific procedures is also a big part of your PhD and it sounds as if you have plenty of that.
Good luck and I hope the weather clears enough for you to go on your mini-break off the island!I've got my own flat :j:j
Now I have to pay the bills
And feed my interiors addiction0 -
Yippee! I'm so excited, have booked my own mini-break, to Amsterdam with a girly chum next month
Thanks to the Amex airmiles credit card, we're just paying for the hotel for 2 nights........oh and drinks (lots), dinners (lavish), touristy stuff...
Anyone been there and have any good tips? I'm not remotely fussed in seeing a load of laydeez of the night in shop windows and hopefully my friend doesn't want to go and get stoned in coffee shops.....I'm 99% sure she won't but you never know what might happen when two mid-to-late 30's old schoolfriends get together, lol.0 -
Ta there Make up - Thanks the the tips I may develop them more. I read alot of papers and found a few peoples styles I like, just have to make sure I can manage my time properly. So I think I will find some that he 'likes' therefore you might have cracked it. - you are an angel - as for phd types - i dont really fit the bill, dont take myself very seriously - its a job for me really and I treat it like a job so maybe that's where i am going wrong?
Probably need to wear science goggles at my desk and look very serious......saying things like, well that looks 'significantly different' or something - then again they already think I am a bit dotty - so maybe not.
Consoling myself with a cupasoup (i forgot to have lunch) and dollopped in two big spoons of rice from the tea which is always good, but now am stuffed!!!!!
Also have about a billion seeds - which I sorted out last week and seriously need to think about sorting more out and sowing them, I know I have far too many (if you need anything specific pm me!! - but I don't have any plants that grow money.)
Collected 3 *free* big bags compost from the college farm and a *free* bag of barely or oats (havent looked) for my chookies. All of the bags have holes in so they can't be used so woo hoo - will do something nice the technician (hob nobs>) as a nice thank you return.
Waving - am exhausted, pals snowed in so it looks like we are here for the weekend. young folks have a pal staying over each, so I won't see them much and means I am able to ask for favours at some point later when I am stuck.Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.

only some things like a greenhouse
don't have any fruit just flowers and veggies which are are really easy
depends where you live as to what will work
growing is very easy - whether its in a pot, bag or a bit of garden
clever things plants they only need a wee start off and then they just do there own thing.
Send me a message with location - what you like to eat and what kinda garden you have and I will send back a list of seeds that might suit?
After all my mission is to cover the world with flowers ............:)Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.

well done on how you decided to use the lodgers money.
I'm starting to plan our small veggie plot for this year, and what we're going to grow in the green house. Decided that we'll probably grow the things which are expensive to buy, just need to decide what to do and how to tackle the sluggies0 -

OH catches them in slug traps filled with beer (they drown) then puts them on bird table as beer marinated snacks for the local birdies:p0 -
