i got a sewing machine with my 18th birthday money, i used it to make myself some clothes before i went to uni.
had a good but expensive weekend. Had to get a new whirlygig as ours broke but managed to get a good quality one for half price.
we've also got ourselves an electric heater with hearth, as our storage heater is worse than useless it was either a new storage heater or an electric one. We've had a look at the costs and considering we're not home when the storage heater kicks out it's heat we went for the leccy one. it was a bargain though, rang up for £50 less than the listed price (? but not arguing) then we also got 15% off it as well.
i do feel stupid though, just sussed yesterday that the light fittings in the living room have 6 (energy saving) light bulbs, but if we get normal ceiling lights fitted back again we'll only be using 2 light bulbs, it's got to help hasn't it?
we treated ourselves with the money we saved on the heater to a vacs carpet cleaner, been trying to borrow one or rent one but this didnt' cost much more than renting for a weekend and we don't know anyone to borrow one from.
thankfully we've been able to use savings for everything so it's only on the debt for the interest free credit month and will be paid in full next month.
so lots of money out but it was all necessary and hopefully will save us money in the long run.
hope you're having a good long weekend everyone, we've got good weather at the moment which is really surprising for a bank holiday.

Its an investment and you sound like you juggled lots of things

We have several light holders with 6 bulbs in here (old house) - I only put 2 low energy ones in the fittings - skin flint - once I got my energy owl - I turned into the electricity police - :D

My elec DD has gone down by 10 quid a month - not much but something

Must fill in an expenses form at work - petrol here htere and everywhere this past few months, but I haven't' filled it in yet

Got asked today if I would consider 2 days private consultancy work in Shetland again - um - for another project at work - very funny - they were sheepish cos they told me last month I couldnt do it anymore cos its extra work and I should be concentrating on PhD - this month surprise surprise - its harvest time and we are still short staffed

    Cash is cash

OH has asked if a couple of his chums can come for 2 days 'b and b' - I may have to 'lend' them my room - the more the merrier

French student gave me £40 for food over the past couple weeks - although went out for tea (£10) and (£10 drinks) so I only netted 20 quid - will put it into the spotty pot tomorrow for my xmas stash.

LT I did good I negotiated with OH re xmas - we're maybe now doing a bit of both, xmas wiht open fires and slobbing - New year in central Scotland - well done for suggesting it - I honestly wouldn't have thought he'd cave in.....

congratulations unix can't wait to see the photo's

Fay glad the negotiation has gone well, i bet you're both happy with the results.
OH has just replaced the two lights in the living room, was a slight glitch but we're past that now. thinking the next job, apart from some food, is to take the new carpet cleaner to the rug and remind myself what the original colour is.
Also called the sparky who removed a storage heater for my mum so waiting for him to get back to us, once he's isolated the switch we can remove evil storage heater and figure out how to fit the hearth and leccy fire.
really need to clean this tip though it's doing my head in. what a way to spend a day off with your OH

    <slides sheepishly into thread>

Sorry I've been away so long! I have been sneaking in and catching up occasionally but not posting - so that'll be spying then :)

Congratulations to Mrs Unix :) Very exciting :)

And well done on all that evilness gone out of Edna, and on your negotiations over the holidays, and on the extra work (funny how they change their minds when they need something!)

I've been absent and going slowly mad cos have only 3 weeks of PhD left! Aarrgghh! Was doing well til this morning, when Evil Supervisor p*ssed me off something chronic :) But lots of deep breaths and headache tablets later, and I'm off for a quick walk in the sunshine after the thunder, and then back to it with renewed enthusiasm because after all I'm doing this for ME not HIM and it'll all be over in three weeks apart from the viva unless I have to do it all again cos it's as long and waffly as this sentence...

    :)
