    Hi all,
Sorry I don't contribute to this much, I read almost every day and that takes up most of my time!
Good luck with the presentation Fay, and with the wedding plans Unix, and with the job hunting to everyone who's looking for a job. Wish I knew what I wanted to do... On Monday this week I was desperate to get away from here and get a different job. Not quite so desperate today but have been thinking I need something different for about 7 years now! The only thing that really holds me back is a) not really knowing what I want to do, and b) the thought that I would never be able to get to work by 8-30 or 9 in the morning (at least this one has flexibility regarding time-keeping!)

On the gardening front, our veg. garden (we moved houe 18 months ago and spent last summer tussling with a huge area of ground elder, lumps of concrete and rusty old metal) is now almost sorted! It's much bigger that our last place, but somehow I still seem to have filled it all and have more things I want to plant... now a lady further down the village, who's not really into gardening and has arthritis, has offered the use of her garden, to use one side to grow veg and in return keep the rest tidy and try to make it look nice. This sounds good to me and we've made a bit of a start, just wish I had more time but I have loads of things I want to plant there (her garden is sunnier and more sheltered than ours). I'm itching to go and fill it up! The one snag in all this is that we'll be away for most of May with one thing and another - just hope we can clear it and get lots in this week.

Fay - just read your post about cooking for farmers markets and the like, and the 'fill your freezer' idea - do you have to get approved by the local council health and safety people or something like that before you cook food for sale? I seem to remember some regulations about food hygeine or something once when I thought about making jam.

Better go and do some 'real' work (the stuff they pay me for...

    Hi T

It depends where you are - and how often you are doing it - I was only cooking in my own house less than a certain amount of hours a month so I didn't need to do anything other than let them know I was doing it. (check with your local envrionmental health officers they ARE really really helpful)

When you go and cook in other folks houses you don't need to be checked out.

But to be honest having your kitchen checked etc isnt a big deal - there are guidelines ot follow - I think.

    Goodluck!!

I have been health and safety checked. Which has an amusing story attached.

I had spent 2 weeks fumigating and scrubbing the kitchen ready for the visit. The morning dawned and it had sodding well snowed which meant the children were off school. I barred them from the kitchen (which is difficult as you have to walk through it to get to the living room). The officer arrived and had just sat down with a coffee when DD2 wandered aimlessly through clutching the hamster!!! Honestly could of strung her up!

Luckily the officer saw the funny side and I passed.

Thanks for the advice Fay, I did look into making home-produced jam years ago which is why I asked about the Environmental Health stuff, they sent me some info but when I found they had to come and check I gave up on the idea as at the time I was living in a tiny narrowboat, 6 feet by 20 feet, with no running water inside and the toilet only about 3 feet from the cooker, I don't suppose they would have approved that. I lived there for 8 years though, best place I ever lived, and entertained a string of friends to plenty of meals with never any problems. Anyway I'll bear it in mind now I'm living in a 'semi-civilised' manner!
