Neighbour keeps feeding my dog
Comments

Well I can totally understand OP's dilemma ... if this nutty neighbour is ignoring arkonite_babe and feeding the dog each time she spots it out, then it is obvious there is something deeper than just a neighbour being friendly and offering a treat now and then.
It's nice to think your neighbours like your pets and want to give them a treat now and then (I do it to my neighbour's dog, she does it with mine, but we have an understanding a couple of doggy biccies a week and nothing more!) ... but this is totally OTT.
Trouble is, this neighbour, while being a pain in the neck and obviously not considering the dog having weight problems if she carries on, is just going to do what she wants to do regardless of any requests not to.
Personally, I would get one of those dummy video cameras that you can mount on a wall. It senses movement and will turn in that direction, with a red light coming on as though it's recording.
I would then tell this crackpot neighbour that my poor dog is on a strict diet and borderline for needing expensive medication because of the digestive problems she is causing it.
I would then point out the camera and tell her I would be collecting evidence because her feeding the dog like this is tantamount to causing it harm and the police have told me to keep records of who is causing my dog harm then I can sue them to cover the cost of my vet bill.
It might sound heavy handed, but really, it doesn't sound as though this neighbour is going to stop ... I think you need to get tough here ...0 -
Dog's are fine left alone during the day, if that is the routine they are used to, some dogs do need more attention but it really depends on how they have been bought up.
I got my dog from a rescue and i specifically asked for a dog that could live outside and that would be fine while i went out to work all day and NEVER did it seem to be a problem they where still perfectly fine giving me a dog.
As it happen's i have a nusience neighbour of my own who didn't share my opinion that dogs are ok living outside and she called the RSPCA saying that my dog was mistreated.
Strangly though the RSPCA came around saw my dog, looked at the conditions she lived in and went away HAPPY, that my dog was happy healthy and well cared for dispite living outside and dispite me being at work all day.
I think we have a tendency to humanise our fluffy little companions.. but at the end of the day they are animals and perfectly suited to being outdoors as long as provisions are made for thier care.
The OP admits to her dog spending alot of time outside but i never read anything anywhere that lead me to belive the dog was anyway unloved and uncared for, infact quite the opposite she is concerned about the dogs health while a neighbour is feeding her dog unhealthy treats.
Personally i'd go with the "white lie" about the vets concern for the dogs health, your neighbour seems well meaning enough but oviously your dog and his/her big brown eye's are much more compeling than your request for her to stop feeding it.0 -
Having read the read the reply I now see the error of my ways. Obviously, you are right and I am wrong.
These rich tea people eh? Where will it end, one day rich tea biscuits the next crack cocaine at the school gates. While you are on the phone demanding they are immediately arrested for daring to show some affection I would demand their garden is searched for bird tables, you know what they are like, feeding birds that no doubt belong in your garden. How dare your mutt respond to anyone else but you, I should have said you would be utterly correct to severely correct him/her. As well as chaining the mutt you could draw a line in the snow (see the weather conditions come in useful) some poor mutts have been left indoors all day by uncaring owners who have thoughtlessly taken them in (or as said given access) – anyway – the line will ensure mutt sits and waits for you and only you to return home. Pats on the head eh? That’ll show him!! Whats 8 hours? In the snow??
Blooming rich tea, next thing you know they will be keeping an eye on your house (obviously they are at home all day) and taking note when your burglar alarm goes off – or Billy burglar is going up your drainpipe. Taking in parcels (feeding the mutt when you are on holiday) - these people eh? Infact why not demand they are arrested immediately why should you as a taxpayer have to put up with this? Neighbours eh??No you are so right not to waste your time going over there and explaining ......(I know I know you've done it before so don't waste another 5 minutes - time is so valuable)....0 -

Obviously you have too much time on your hands. You should take up dog sitting.:j little fire cracker born 5th November 2012 :j0 -
Mouseymousey - I think that's a tad out of line really. Rich tea biscuits might not seem much to you but AB has asked for advice on how to resolve the issue. That includes how to best get the point accross to her neighbour who's ALREADY been asked not to feed the dog. I know suggestions have been made about mentioning the possibility of Diabetes... I hate to say this but it IS a real possibility if the dog is fed human junk food (and I'm sorry but rich tea biscuits do not feature in the green section of the nutrition wheel I was shown at school...)
The point is that Ab DOES want to address the issue, and I have seen nothing to suggest she doesn't want to go and speak to her neighbour (who may or may not be somewhat loopy - let's be fair we're hearing one side of a story but then again AB probably knows this lady better than we do?), just that she's already asked her not to feed the dog and obviously it hasn't worked so what would people suggest she says or does next?
I really don't see any justification for the tone or content of your post if you have read all the posts explaining the situation - Ab has even explained the dog isn't exactly shut out in the freezing cold (and certainly isn't chained up) it has a purpose built dog kennel to shelter in. I'm sure interaction with the dog isn't discouraged - merely feeding it when it is obviously causing a health issue.DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

It's not WHAT this neighbour gives the dog ... it is the AMOUNT she's giving it ... and against the OP's express wish.
I am sure the OP wouldn't mind the odd biscuit now or then ... but this neighbour has obviously made up her mind she will give the dog what she wants, when she wants and that's not good for any dog.
It's obvious your problem with the OP is that the dog is outside.
But that is YOUR problem, not the OP's and not the dog's ... it's got shelter, food and water. All the things the dog wardens and the RSPCA deem necessary for a dog that is outside part of the day.
For all we know, the neighbour might have overlooked the facts that this dog has everything it needs outside and, feeling sorry for it (or perhaps not being able to see its shelter, food and water, thinks it has nothing out there) is trying to "cheer it up" in her way ... but too much of a good thing is a bad thing ...
OP, you have to do what is right for your dog and anyone with a smidgen of sense knows to feed a dog a large amount of anything is bad for it ... !!!0 -
rich tea biscuit's are just NOT GOOD for a dog in ANY amounts... one off treat such but they should NEVER be a regular part of a dogs diet.
I can understand the OP's concern.0 -

That tactic could work very well indeed I think. Rather than a flat out "don't feed him" I'll see if I can persuade her to give him carrot instead. I feel the "don't" in a request just might enticed her to continue feeding him junk just because she can
*think waving a red flag to a bull scenario*
He loves carrot so I'm sure he won't mind giving up the rich tea biscuits :rotfl:0 -
Make sure you tell her how many lol! otherwise he might start growing long ears and long pointy teeth (Monty Python reference shamelessly inserted) - although his night vision should get excellent!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Shame you can't chain her up, lol. Good luck with this, hope it gets resolved amicably.0
