The owners all have different expectations and have different running costs but all have one thing in common...They all rate them very highly and are glad to see the back of oil and LPG.
To counter that all over the web, including MSE, are people deeply unhappy with their heat pump systems; some have simply ripped them out.
It really is surprising that you are only aware of people happy with their systems, yet in the only independant trial of some 84 systems, over a 12 month period, with all the manfacturers involved, 87 % of the systems did not perform satisfactorily; and to my knowledge the reasons have not yet been discovered. or published.
There is no doubt that a properly functioning system, in a suitable house, can give good results. However even a system that achieves an overall COP of say 3.0 over a year, and takes into account defrost cycles, does not IMO justify the huge cost the industry charge for their systems.
If the systems can be made to work satisfactorily, why is the Heat Pump industry pressurising the Government to provide long term subsidies in the shape of RHI.
The paper above, commissioned by the industry, clearly shows that for heat pumps to compete they need to be subsidised.0 -
Ok, here's the thing...
Before I start I have ackowledged poor installs i've read about on the web but I come from a point of experience...
Anyway searching the web there does not seem to be many issues with kit from the market leaders and in one instance I know of personally of the manufacturer assisted in sorting an incorrect install FOC, worked fine up to the point of failure where an issue was Identified. Contrast that GCH manufacturers. This should please as you seem say they have no further involvement. Perhaps not the norm but even so...
From personal experience and from friends/collegues who have ASHPs the figures do stack up RHI or not. RHI is purely the icing on the cake even if the initial cost is higher.
For comparison...
PV for example is utterly pointless in the mainstream without the FIT subsidy. Speaking for myself it is only on the roof cos the FITs level is just plain daft [for me anyway >>> 10%] Anyone who says otherwise is telling fibs...
Solar thermal - pointless even with RHI unless you source all the kit cheap and do the install at mates rates. Even then...
I'm guessing manufacturers want to be included in the RHI for pure business reasons?
There are 10'000s and 10'000s of ASHP/GSHP installs out there yet the utilities board is full to the brim of high Oil, LPG, GCH and resistive electric heating bills. Unfortunately happy GSHP/ASHP owners don't come onto the web to tell people about it.
Anyway got to dash, converting one of the out buildings to a home cinema, chill out room. Now... how to heat it in winter, hmmm...
PS If my COP averaged 3.5 would than mean I'm paying 2.5p per unit?0 -
