Roses do not grow in winter in UK... they all come from africa grown by underpaid Kenyans, working for foreign-owned factories, who used pesticides and water from drying rivers in an arid country..

Please stop buying roses for valentines days
Cheers
Greg
That is very interesting Greg and has made me think about it all. I dont really agree with the commercialism of Valentines but still find myself buying my girlfriend flowers at Valentines as I dont want to seem un-romantic!
But following this thought about buying things from abroad from underpaid workers, shouldnt that mean we should never buy anything brand made as they are from sweat shops, or food being grown all over the world with workers being paid nothing?
I'm not disagreeing with your point, but just hightlighting the sad point that we dont know where most of the things we buy are made/grown these days do we? :think:Current Debt Owed To Family: [STRIKE]£12,575[/STRIKE] £9,000 :wall:Estimated Debt Free... [STRIKE]Dec 2012[/STRIKE] Aug 2012

You're quite right Greg. Most of the smaller headed roses do come from Kenya, where it has been shown most of the workers are underpaid etc. However, if you actually pay a decent price for your roses, they're likely to come from Holland. This is generally understood for Grand Prix roses which have a much larger head.
If you want to buy roses and don't want the unethical cloud over your head - opt for companies which display either a Fair Flowers Fair Plants logo on their website - flowers24hours or arenaflowers. Flowers24 has a 10% off with coupon VALOVE14 - not sure about the others. Check out the Fair Flowers Fair Plants website to see what they're all about - some good stuff there.0 -
I mentioned this to one of my brothers who says Roses do grow in the UK in winter, he says he should know as he did gardening for a living and has seen them growing in peoples gardens.
He also said at least the people in Africa are getting some work growing roses. And also said what are people going to do when someone stops them growing them?
I guess he's got a point there.
In my opinion countries in places like Africa should have the opportunity to trade their way out of poverty rather than relying on aid, rules of international trade need to be weighted in favour of poor communities.
Nevertheless, if you are concerned about the ethics of growing roses then check the labels for the country’s origin before purchasing.0 -
I buy fresh flowers from Aldi, very satisfied. Ordered a bouquet to be sent to a friend, still waiting for it to arrive!!!!!
When I asked where it was, I was told the post code was wrong and GPO couldn't send . So they were left to rot in some delivery room.
I thought GPO knew all post codes, there was a full address given.
Never again will I use ALDI0 -

I am all for saving money but it's the overwhelming influx of cheap nasty supermarket bouquets that is killing off the Floristry industry. Being a florist myself I know that red Roses on valentines are ridiculously priced in a Florist shop but there are alternatives - ask your Florist to do something special within your budget - there are hundreds of different flowers that are just as nice a Roses - even hundreds of different variety of rose (it's only the price of red that goes up) - they'll be happy to accomodate and then you get to give your love interest something more thoughtful and personal rather than unimaginative cheap tatt!0
