They usually ask for proof of what the money was spent on,if it was a top up on your mortgage, along with receipts for all the work(no matter how long ago it was)

    No they don't.

In any event, why would it be reasonable to keep an invoice for 5 years ago ..??

Theres been an example on here recently where they wanted receipts from 16 years ago.Its perfectly reasonable as alot of re-mortgages have been used to pay for new cars or trips to disneyland, why should the taxpayer have to pay the interest on that?

You clearly don't get it .... do you work for the DWP?

Let me make it very clear for you.

If a person has a mortgage secured on their house and can't pay it, their house is REPOSSESSED.

The purpose of the help is to stop this happening.

I feel it is irrelevant why they have a mortgage ... the bottom line if they can't pay because they are out of work the scheme is there to help.

For the example you provide re 16yrs of receipts ... that is a down right disgrace ...... do they have no clue the stress of not having a job

Whilst i have no wish to get into a slanging match with you,I clearly DO get it,thru ill health I have had to survive on benefits for 11 years and i make it my business to understand the system as best I can.
Answer me this if someone re-mortgaged their home say 8 years ago and they spent most of the capital raised on a new car and a holiday(after paying off old mortgage)do you consider it right that the tax payer should now pay for that holiday and new car?Or is tax payers money better spent helping those who didnt have the holiday and new car?

    :naughty:

To repeat, and this will be my last post justifying this.

If somebody has a mortgage on their house for whatever reason and they can't pay due to unemployment, they loose it.

(NOTE, 99.99% of people who have lost their job don't want to be unemployed)

The end result is a homeless family which costs more to support and drags the economy in a downward spiral ...

You seem to have the same two tier attitude of a DWP person .... the sort of person that will do all they can to qualify out the person from having any help.

It almost sounds of jealousy just because somebody used their property to up their lifestyle.

I see it 100% correct that the mortgage assistance should do just that no matter why they required the mortgage.

It sounds like you would advocate a person on JSA IB, to sell all their assets before they received a bean....

    Hi all.

Wondering if someone can help. My boyfriend was made redundant months ago and has struggled to find a job since (it's been around 6 months). He is on JSA now. I have read about SMI and am concerned about our eligibility. Although we have not been together for long, we share the mortgage and now my savings are affecting the fact that he cannot pay his share of the mortgage. I am wondering why I bothered saving (i.e. not having a car, not going on holidays etc) because now it means I will have to spend it all on paying all of our £1,000 per month mortgage. My question is this: can he apply for SMI without mentioning my savings or should I go spend it all now? If he is out of work for longer, it means the money I saved for my kids' future (£20k) will have to be used up.

    Thanks

You are correct, you will not be eligible for ISMI with £20K savings. You must declare this savings, or you will be committing fraud. If you spend the money now, any non essential expenditure will be seen as deprivation of capital, and still counted as notional income.
    Gone ... or have I?

    Hi DMG24,

Many thanks for your help. So would this include me opening a savings account for my kids with my £20k savings? I don't want their future to be affected because of my boyfriend's redundancy.

I've searched the internet for 'deprivation of capital' but I am struggling to understand the definition.

    Thanks so much.

    Jessicajay,

A bit of advise ... start getting rid of your saving ... the obvious way ... you have to set yourself up and position yourself financially ... BTW ... you won't get a bean if you work over 24hrs a week and earn more than the JSA IB weekly amount .. If you 'Seperate' and he has no money ... then he will get help ..... but make sure they don't smell a rat .... if the mortgage is in joint name ... you are stuffed ... sorry
