Free HD TV will available through freeview fairly soon, perhaps consider getting a TV with the relevant technology.

    http://www.freeview.co.uk/freeview/Resolutions/About-Products/Product-types/High-definition-television-HDTV-on-Freeview

no TVs have the technology to receive HD freeview yet - there isn't even a set-top-box available yet.
If you want free HD content today, the only way is freeSAT and you can already get HD TVs with that built in (Panasonic TX-32LZD81 for example). All you need is a satellite dish to plug it into.

Dont use e.buyer. think you have a deal then they cancel your order when they over sell.

I haved used them numerous times for various pc parts and they have been really good. Think they have just been overwhelmed with the popularity of this product after being featured on MSE.

Agree with other posters you are better off buying a branded tv with a good contrast ratio or at least the one which uses a branded panel.

OLED will be tiny and super expensive and not available for the masses for years.

There is no tvs which claim to support Freeview HD or any planned release date. The link given relates to a post from april last years and suggests we would already have it!!!

Heres an alternative for my 2p's worth http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-32AV555-Widescreen-Ready-Freeview/dp/B0012WTIFS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1233771842&sr=1-5

Toshiba 32AV555 - 32" Widescreen HD Ready LCD TV - With Freeview £334.82 & this item Delivered FREE in the UK

Available for less than £320 elsewhere but I haven't used these websites so can't recommend

Lol, I sort of agree with you. I am keeping an eye on the TV market, am looking for a 37 or 42" TV from a well known brand and won't consider 'cheaper' brands.

Maybe you could assist some of the posters above by posting some links for better quality alternatives?

I agree - trouble is, this is a money saving forum, not a quality TV forum - the two don't mix.;)
  • The problem with LCD's in comparison with OLED's is they use a lot more electricity. Even though OLED's will be more expensive they will be more cost effective to run. The problem here is whether or not you can afford to purchase one for the price they'll be selling for just to out way the cost to run them.

...check out the contrast handling of your cheap LCD. If its below 8000:1 then any dark areas of a scene may just appear black and if you are watching a dark or nighttime scene the whole picture may be a huge blob of darkness with no detail at all.

Is there any way of searching for higher contrast ratio TVs?

I am looking for a 19" to 21" LCD for the bedroom with a good contrast ratio. My mum has recently got a 10000:1 Samsung (32") for the front room and a 400:1 Polaroid (15") for the bedroom and there is a huge difference ! What would be a good minimum for this size of TV??
  • I bought both my DD's a 19" Technika LCD from Tesco for Christmas this year. Unfortunately on Friday one of them wouldn't come off standby so rang Tescos yesterday and they are going to collect tomorrow for a full refund and would you believe it the other one went BANG this morning also now going back for a full refund. Both of them are broken within 48 hours of each other and have both just had a months worth of use out of them. Tesco have been very good about refunding and collecting.

So now I am looking for replacement LCDs with 5 year warranties on them both. Seen a good Sharps one on the John Lewis website, but out of stock! Has any bought from Richer Sounds? What is their customer relations like with faulty goods?

A lot of people are getting off post with opinions not facts. where are the cheap lcds.

However some things need pointing out.
OLED TVs are a long way off (other than to the RICH), as is a fully comprehensive HD service.

The cheapest way to gey a bedroom TV is to buy a widescreen computer monitor ( pref 16:9, most are 16:10) with a digital input and get a Freeview box that upscates to HD.

You will have a long wait as there is so little bandwidth available for HD channels other than a demo one. You will have to wait until analogue is almost completely switched off.

  • Anyone seen any good TV deals from retailers that John Lewis might be able to price match?
You gotta be in it to win it, and who knows you might even get a Brucie!

Remember that most computer monitors do not have speakers.

Sorry slipped my mind, thanks for pointing that out. Quite a few do have tinny small ones, however if no speakers in the monitor, you can pick up amplified speakers for pcs cheap from around a fiver, 2.1 are great for movies. Loads of second hand ones around as well.
