    I give up.

Lol, I sort of agree with you. I am keeping an eye on the TV market, am looking for a 37 or 42" TV from a well known brand and won't consider 'cheaper' brands.

Maybe you could assist some of the posters above by posting some links for better quality alternatives?

Free HD TV will available through freeview fairly soon, perhaps consider getting a TV with the relevant technology.

I would suggest caution with some of these cheaper HD TVs. I recently bought the Hanspree online but had to return it as it was faulty.

I too had the same problem with my Hannspree tv, it has just been returned, although i think the spec and pic quality is right up there with the rest.

  • Now isn't the time to buy an hdtv; as prices are more expensive than they were during the price war in May/June/July 2008.

I would wait for OLED TVs to start entering the market in significant numbers, it might not make Plasma & LCD TVs obsolete (atleast not immediately), but it will bring prices down. (just as the introduction of LCDs into the market destroyed the price of Plasmas)
  • I found this website really useful http://plasmaorlcd.co.uk
It's all about honest advice and good prices for quality televisions.

Tesco have a UMC full hd ready 21.6" freeview for £169.96
and 22" HD ready with dvd and freeview for £195.

They also have some good deals on Technika's.

Don't forget you get cashback at topcashback and you can use tesco vouchers.

I am looking for one for my little boy - think I will go for one of these, seem a good buy.

When is OLED going to available to the masses though? I was wanting a tv within the next month or so.

  • Just a thought.

Prices at the moment are significantly higher than they were at Christmas.

The Sony 32V4000 32" LCD was available everywhere in late December for the princely sum of £349 (£299 at Richer Sounds). It has now gone back to around £400.

Correct me if I'm wrong ..... but the market is probably even more quiet than it was back then. Perhaps the braver souls amongst us might try to haggle the price back down to 2008 level?

Oh ... and all the reviews say that its a very good set.

Personally I would steer clear of all the "never heard of them" manufacturers.
There's a lot of rubbish out there.

    Good luck!

  • These may look like great deals but you may be better off (and save lots) staying with your old CRT telly. The picture quality will almost certainly be a lot better when viewing Standard Definition (SD) broadcasts - which most still are. When you go above 28 inches an SD picture really starts to look poor. If you are lucky enough to be viewing a lot of Hi Def stuff then check out the contrast handling of your cheap LCD. If its below 8000:1 then any dark areas of a scene may just appear black and if you are watching a dark or nighttime scene the whole picture may be a huge blob of darkness with no detail at all. I bought a Hanspree 32inch and returned it the same day for that reason. I work in TV and most of my colleagues agree that old style CRTs are still much better for SD pictures. If you can, make sure you see the telly in action, preferably with a dvd of something dark, eg a thriller/horror film. Good luck...
