RSPCA in Scotland - I didn't know this.

  • Its no wonder that 70% of the Scottish population think (mistakenly) that the RSPCA look after the welfare of Scotland's animals. The RSPCA's marketing budget is £17,000,000 - the total annual spend by the Scottish SPCA is just over £10,000,000!

The E&W charity would need to amend its governing document in order to allow it to operate in Scotland. As the RSPCA was established by various acts of Parliament, I am not sure where that takes us, but presumably the OSCR was happy to register it.
Just wondered fengirl: if a charity is registered in Scotland, should their OSCR number appear on their website? Because it's certainly not in the same place as their 'other' charity number. And I can't find the RSPCA on the OSCR website. Does that mean they should not be soliciting for donations there?

Or is it OK for them to solicit donations as long as they don't have a Scottish presence?

  • Just thought I'd post this link about the topic, has the RSPCA's argument that it didn't deliberately run camapigns in Scotland :

The RSPCA operate in NI, as do the Royal Irish Regiment and, up until their name change, the Royal Ulster Constabulary and lots of 'Royal' (named) organizations so your post about the Queen makes no sense whatsoever.

    I

For the sake of clarify the USPCA operates in NI - https://www.uspca.co.uk. They are nothing to do with the RSPCA, not a branch of the RSPCA, not an affiliate - no relationship, not the same.

As for Royal Ulster Constabulary - well, yes, they were a local police force until they disbanded and the new PSNI was created.

Thanks for that....interesting comments at the bottom, especially those that say the SSPCA shouldn't have used funds to 'attack' another charity.

I suspect people simply dont realise the scale of this issue, drastic times need drastic measures etc.

As for the RSPCA saying it has to buy UK wide advertising from satellite channels...even if that's the case, it doesn't explain why flyers have been got though Scottish newspapers?

Isnt it horrifying how much money doesnt go to the animals? I used to support RSPCA but when I saw the accounts years ago I dumped them and started donating to all the small rescues.

Its a difficult call, because ultimately the animals suffer.

My personal opinion is that the RSPCA is more of a law enforcement agency.

The RSPCA aren't a law enforcement agency, they have no rights at all as they're a charity. If they come banging at your door demanding entry, they might as well be the Salvation Army. Although not everybody realises it and thinks they have a right of entry.

The Scottish get free prescriptions and dentistry.....so its swings and roundabouts.

What's that got to do with charity? And no we don't get free prescriptions nor denistry.

The Queen is the Queen of England.

And the rest of the UK and Australia, New Zealand etc

Just to add - fundraising is not a charitable activity, so an org does not have to be a registered charity in order to fundraise.

Personally, I always look at the balance sheet of a charity before I give and need to be satisfied that I know where the money is going - a legacy from my days as a ferocious Lottery assessor.
