I'm a Biomedical Scientist working for the NHS (although they aren't my employer) and spend most of my time looking a blood results and Blood Transfusion.

The Labs are still being paid on-call allowances that were supposed to end last year but have been extended till next. Most will take a significant pay cut if they lose it - some in the region of £2000 a month (8 on-calls x £235) though average is £1000.

Dear god we get £9.97 (for the night not per hour) to be on call from 5pm to 9am which is less than 63p an hour!!!!! If we are out with a home delivery all night its still 63p an hour! One of my friends is a theatre nurse and they get their hourly rate plus £90 to be on call even if they are not called in.

    Well done x
  • PCSO soon to be PC. I honestly don't want to be a PC but I don't want the costs of getting a degree or try another job and suffer the major wage cut/ possibility of unemployment. So I'm off to do a job I dislike for the money and security, like most people I guess.

I do however have an idea for a business and serval childrens books. With the aid of my excellent ex I'm hoping to try out these other avenues as I think I'm more creative then my current job.

Is that it for on-call? They certainly do rip you off. Out with a lady and the proverbial hits the fan for you to deal with at 63p an hour:mad:

God I think my OH thought it was more than that - She's just started her preceptorship in a hospital near Cambridge on band 5 for 12 months. The other interviewing trusts said it was an 18-24 progression to band six.
30th June 2021 completely debt free…. Downsized, reduced working hours and living the dream.
  • I am a grade 2 teaching assistant at a special needs school. Do 32.5 hr week, plus 5 hrs week curriculum work (basically anything teachers need putting together for lessons). Also work for a school holiday club and currently in the process of getting approved to look after a student outside of school, all to do with the family going through social services and being granted hours etc.

    Love it all....

That's such a shame when there are loads of people desperately trying to get in the police who can't due to the sheer numbers wanting to get in!

It also must be pretty hard to deal with all the absolute rubbish that comes with the job if you don't enjoy the rest of it. My boyfriend loves the job, and that's the only way he gets through all the abuse, the hours, the danger etc.
It's not like some jobs where you can just turn up, get through the 9 hours and toddle off home again is it?

That's 63p per hour on top of their regular pay (as in they get their pay for the month, then get 63p per hour on top for every hour on call. They aren't actually working for 63p an hour.

Some people don't get anything extra for being on call.
