This Cat is in alot of pain according to the OP & i'll say it AGAIN, NOBODY has seen the Cat, nobody is veterinary qualified, nobody knows it's history. What may LOOK simple may not be as per my example. I'm not saying it's as serious as that, or even that there's anything that will be done, but if it's suffering & in alot of pain something will be.
  • at least you knew nothing else was amiss and the paw was not infected as the cat had been seen by a vet - the OP's cat has not, so we cannot deduce there is no infection. The OP says this cat has lost claws on 'his right paws' - presumably front and back then.. I do wonder whether this is through fighting, so a check up would be a good idea.

Also for advice of what to clean it with - the strength of the peroxide solution she is using is unknown - that stuff stings even at very low concentrations, and I am pretty sure it will irritate and inflame if its too strong!

These posters are on a losing battle before they start arent they? Simply because the 'regulars' think that they have the answer to everything.

The OP asked for opinions on if she was doing the right thing as she CANNOT afford a vet.

Quite simply, some common sense is needed here.

The cat lost some claws which can result in the cat having a sore paw for a while because it is bruised but it is very unlikely to need painkillers.

Cats often lose claws and they do grow back. It also would be likely that a vet wouldnt even give any antibiotics because as it had only just happened, it couldnt be infected.

I think it is so unfair for new posters to come in here and have this treatment for having views that are different....it doesnt make it a pleasant place to be.

Some of you are very nasty to new posters when you dont agree with them, but if one of the regualrs were to say the same thing, its all nicey nicey then. Its not very nice.

There is nothing wrong with the way the OP has dealt with her cat and she needed some reassurance.....not dictating to.
  • Lots of advice has been given about how to get help with vet bills LT.

How do you know when it happened?

She didnt ask for help in how to pay vet bills.

She posted yesterday morning about it. I would make an asumption it had happened recently to then.

Infection doesnt happen just because a claw goes missing. It needs time to develop

I think TBH, people get sick to death of how animals are treated, or not in this case. Say it was a kid, and the Mum came here saying their child was sick & had been in a fight at school, had x injuries but she couldn't afford to take it to see the Dr? It also is beyond belief to me as the OP is PREGNANT, how the heck can you afford a child if you can't afford a Cat?

Maybe if she came here saying she'd rather deal with it at home but would go to the Vet if needed we'd be more sympathetic. If you can't afford £30 for a consultation + basic meds, what do you do if it's run over or gets really sick?

I for one just wish people thought of these things before getting Pets.

People dont all have a perfectly mapped out life with plans that never change. You have no idea at all about the circumstances in anyone's lives who post on here like this so isnt it a little harsh to judge everyone and punish them with your anger when you are not aware of the facts?

Well you could assume that - does not mean that is the case though.

You also assume that the op is looking for reassurance, however, it is not always appropriate or fair just to offer reassurance.

I once posted on a dog forum as my dog was behaving oddly and had a sore belly - I suppose at the time I was worried and would of course have preferred it if everyone had told me 'she will be fine in the morning' but no, I was advised in no uncertain terms to "get her to the vet immediately - its not worth the risk" - I did and was very glad of the advice, even though it cost me an additional £60 for beng out of hours!

I would however, have been gutted if they had reassured me that the dog would be fine and they were wrong!

Honesty is better than well meaning but misleading platitudes - the OP is an adult and needs to consider the options here.

Of course we all understand that sometimes life does not run to plan - hence all the info re: sources of help for vets fees from so many people on here. However, if you find yourself in crcumstances where you cannot aford vet treatment for a sick animal, it may be kindest to consider rehoming.

This is very true, I agree totally BUT I could maybe sympathise if the OP was trying to get to a Vet & had called them, or was asking about help with vet fees or charities that can help. It's one thing to keep an eye on something & be sure it doesn't get worse & ask for advice on how to best manage it in the meantime as the OP did, but another to admit your pet is in alot of pain & not to ask about help to get it the treatment it needs by a Vet or to mention they called a Vet already

OP ~ If you *have* already, prior to your OP, called a Vet then I apologise

Everyone always has example to back up their own side of a debate. I can tell you an example that will back up mine....doesnt make one right or one wrong does it?

The fact is she cannot afford a vet. She has been told by some where she may get vets help and she has been told by some that what she has done so far is ok. She can do what she likes from now on cant she?

You need to be able to sit back sometimes and let people use some common sense and in this case we havent been talking about a cat who was run over or poisoned, but a cat who has lost some claws in a fight. We need to assume that that is true because that is what the OP said. She may have seen the fight for all we know.

What is the point of over reacting and thinking the worst for what is a simple case of first aid?
