What would they have to steal for you to address the issue? Would you say anything if food went missing after you put it in your room?

Do you feel unable to put anything into writing (a polite note inside your kitchen cupboard door/ inside a carrier bag which contains your food in the fridge)? Do you feel able to write them a letter asking if they have any financial worries you might be able to help them with? Do you feel able to call a house meeting? Do you feel able to speak with this person whilst another calm/ supportive adult is present?

If the answer to every suggestion made on this entire thread is "no I can't" then you will have to accept that you are buying food and cleaning products for two people or move out or start keeping absolutely everything in your room. Only you can decide which option is the least awful.

    Jen,

I have to suggest that perhaps you would benefit from assertiveness lessons. This could help you in more ways than just house sharing!

    hey everyone,

It seems houseshare problems are quite common... I have huge problem with confrontation/tackling these sort of issues etc. I think someone said earlier in the thread - they probably know its unacceptable but I dont say anything so they "get away with it."

It getting to be more and more of a problem as there's noise quite often in the house, people "borrowing" other things (washing powder etc) or other bits of things which go on. I cant even work out what I think will happen if I approach them as theyre not likely to attack me or something really horrible but I just cant seem to do it....

been in your position before and sorry to hear what you are going thru.

i used to live in a university student flat (with 13 rooms!!) have a problem with theft there as well. I found it difficult to confront the people who took my things and I wrote lots of post ti notes and stuck it everywhere. :)

lol I'm told that is a bad thing - passive agression plus theyve always been ignored in the past by the people who matter (the ones doing the thieving) and annoyed everyone else.

  • putting laxitives probably won't help because she'll be using your toilet and the toilet paper you probably paid for !
