I'd have a quiet word with her and perhaps point out that if somebody is prepared to steal small items like food it puts their credibility at stake because they will cause others to wonder whether they're also capable of stealing other things, like going through your room and pockets and stealing money, etc. Is this flatmate pinching food from others as well? If so, maybe you all need to sit down together and thrash this one out before it gets out of proportion and becomes a major irritant to everybody.
  • But what if the thing stolen isn't a physical object that's been removed?.

My unofficial flatmate (I sublet) denies ringing premium rate chatlines and clocking up £20 even though it's on my Bill and I can prove I wasn't in on those dates and times. We have an agreement that he doesn't use the landline, so he doesn't contribute to the cost of it or line rental.

The money comes out of my bank account - it's basically stealing money from me. Although he can be quite shrewd I still don't believe he's lying, he's a mate and we go back. I'm prepared to believe that either he did it when he was wasted and doesn't remember, or that one of his mates did it.

Either way, I want the costs refunded back to me and I can't see any of them admitting to it - which leaves me in a situation - what am I going to do about it if they deny it?. To my mind, my flatmate is responsible for his mates in the house and ensuring nobody takes the !!!!.

    What would you do?.

Write a letter disputing the charges and threatening legal action, and ask for his comments on whether he thinks it is strongly worded enough? See how important your friendship is to him, whether he would let you make an idiot of yourself in this manner.

I once found a small amount of !!!!!! in my computer's downloads folder. In itself this does not bother me, but I had asked the only other person who had access to my computer (BF at the time) not to download music or view dodgy sites due to the risk of viruses. I asked twice and was told "no not me" ... so I gave them one more chance before I got my dad to investigate, as I thought the firewall must have been breached. A short silence before a sheepish admission! :p

The laxative idea is the best, it solved a problem for me, someone was stealing the milk of the door step so a syringe of laxative was added to a bottle through the foil early one morning and the bottle was taken. It put a stop to it.

If you do put laxative in some food then don't go leaveing your loo roll in the toilet or they will use that aswell.

I don't understand how that would work, how would I have legal recourse?. Plus, officially he doesn't live here (yet).

Re: laxatives - funny, yeah. It would just create a tit-for-tat situation and entrench he mistrust further imo.

This is very true, my first year at halls wasn't great sometimes, speically at the earlly hours. just get the security's number and complain. I even went into the people flat underneath mine and took there stereo, and left a note saying "you can have it back when you agree not to play it after 12.00". after that it never happened again.

Stealing food from others is not very good, it will not stop until you say something. It is the best way, maybe just knock on there door and ask to have a chat. :o

If you were in bed before midnight every night in first year your not doing university properly!!

The letter would appear to be to the phone company, but don't actually send it. The aim is to guilt trip your lodger into accepting responsibility instead of allowing you to make a tit of yourself. What explanation has he given? He knows you could not have made the calls, as you say you can prove you were not at the house at the time. So there are only two other options - the bill is totally wrong, so needs to be challenged with the phone company OR your lodger/ one of his guests made the calls. Does he say it's all a big mistake?
