It's not a question of desperation or the popularity of the company.

There are many ways of selling a product like wine, and Pieroth employ this particular method. The trouble with this way of doing things is that the overheads involved in selling small quantities are huge compared with normal retailing,

Result? Their wines are very poor value for money, and they seem to rely on ignorance to get the sale. From reading this thread, I can imagine some of the ludicrous claims made. No hangovers indeed!

I worked in the wine trade in the 80s, and Pieroth had a bad name

While we're at it, I also think that Laithwaites aka Sunday Times Wine Club are overpriced, though this is partly balanced by some of the excellent special offers they run.

If you know your stuff, but aren't looking for anything too exclusive, it's hard to beat the big supermarkets. Waitrose in particular are excellent. Oddbins and Majestic are best among the big specialist chains, with knowledgeable staff and interesting ranges.

    Avoid Pieroth.

If i drink one glass of a cheap wine my face goes beetroot,my stomach blows out,i feel sick and really drunk instantly-i can drink a whole bottle of pieroth and not even have a hangover!

What the rep didn't mention was the amount of times he/she will phone you over the course of the year, quoting different excuses, to get you to buy wine over the phone....
The offers differ from a couple of quid off a bottle, to buy 12 and get 6/12/18 free on top, free of charge....
Depending on how desperate they are for turnover.
Taking that into account, it makes one think on how much really that wine costs to produce and import...
Admittedly some of the wine is rather good but many others are generic wines transported to, bottled in Germany and slapped an "exclusive" label on....
You will find that only in the last 18 months or so, that company did start advertising on its own name in Germany, only, maybe, because the younger generations of Germans don't remember, or know, it being involved in the big "Glycol" scandal of the 80ies...

Yes, you right in stating that you are not obliged to buy like as if it was a club, every 3 months or so.... But this much worse...
Phone calls every 3 to 4 weeks and that's one of the things that used to annoy me to no end in doing, as after a while I used to be on first name terms with the most of my customers and felt extremely guilty in having to subject them to that treatment.

Set your phone on "Friends and Family" only.....

And if any company managers read this.... Is like what you said to me several times....
If you don't like it, then  off....

I did and am happier for it.

My rep calls me four or five times a year
  • I too received the binoculars and wine letter and googled to find out more. After reading this forum my advice is to bin the offer.
I'm a customer of Sunday Times Wine Club and Laithwaite's, which are essentially the same thing, and of Virgin Wines. As a satisfied customer with no other interest in these business, I recommend any or all of them. You can easily find ads for the first two offering half price introductory cases, wine descriptions are reliable and as contact is only by mail you will never be under pressure or feel any obligation to buy.
What possible value is there in being bothered at home by a salesman (as opposed to a wine expert) wanting you to sample from bottles which may have been open for days and have certainly been shaken about in the boot of somebody's car?
Incidentally, when a contributor makes a sweeping statement about knowing supermarket wines and not liking them, credibility hits the floor.

My rep has been selling wine for 30 years. Personally i was more put off by the virgin wines offer of a money off voucher which didnt make it clear until you had wasted a lot of time on the site that you had to spend a lot more to get it and i had no idea what they tasted like.
  • Hi everyone!

Wow.. I am glad to read this company is genuine. I had a meeting booked in for today, but nobody turned up and it was hard to trace their website and phone number. I am waiting for a reply to my email as I'd like to have the tasting. Is the one Australia genuine as well?

    Many thanks

  • Hi all
Just found this thread. I had the weather station plus 6 bottles of wine sampling offer from WIV. I kept the tear off section which I found the other day - I returned it on 5th Jan 2010 and never heard back. I emailed Pieroth the other day but they haven't replied either.
Interestingly, I did not put my 'phone number on the questionnaire - I don't accept calls from anyone I don't want - and they did, of course, have other ways to contact me (my address, for one!) Perhaps this is why they didn't honour their offer with me? Seems like all they were after was my 'phone number and without it they didn't bother to honour their promise. :(
  • August I filled in a questionaire about wine and cut off the bit that said they would send a free 4 cup and saucer Expresso coffee set. Pinned note to fridge (with no evidence of the company name on it) and forgot all about it.
Phone call Monday - Do you remember that survey you filled in about wine? Doh - yes!
A visit from Pieroth wines ensued and the rep didn't recognise that offer nor that survey. We were handed an alarm clock - well OK. Yes the wines were expensive for my (our!!!) tastes - minimum 12 bottles, minimum £10.99+ Vat/ bottle + £7.95 case delivery. The wines were very ordinary except one white and one red - they were £15.99 + vat. We made it plain it was too expensive and the rep left.
I googled the signature on the original survey - one S. Jungnickel -and found he was from Pieroth wines (funny that) and yes I was directed to this site.
As this is my first post I thought I would follow an existing thread and this seems to have been a long one. The saga continues.
  • There havent been any recent posts. Does this mean the whole world is happy with Pieroth, its parent and other linked entities?

Has anyone ever had a problem with Pieroth cold calling and offering 'an amazing deal' and then discovering what has been delivered has been invoiced at a higher price?

If so did you have any luck with returning the wine?

If you DO order, best make sure you pay!

Their finance director, Howard Falk, is also finance director of Alpha Debt Collection Services Limited!!! :rotfl:

His other companies are Cabot Cellars Ltd, Hallgarten Wines Limited, International Wine Forwarding Limited and Vicomte Bernard do Romanet Limited. Don't know if they mean anything to anyone.

    Hi Sarah,
All of the companies that you name come under the umbrella of WIV, a German based wine company.
These also include PLF Pierre Leforest, NTH Niederthiellerhof, PTH Pieroth Wines they also work with Naked Wines.
The basic plan is that they mail mainland U.K. throughout the year offering a cheaply sourced mass produced gift and a samping of wines upon return of there survey asking for a phone number to arrange delivery of this gift
What then happens is that they phone you so a rep can deliver the gift in person and give you a wine tasting using this opportunity to sell there expensive wines.
They will then continually phone you to resell this wine, if you do not buy they will eventually pass your details to a telesales dept who will continue to ring, they also sell your details to other companies who will pester you.
If you are happy to play the game then taste the wine take the gift and say goodbye.
Two of the directors of the WIV Company are David Samuel and Howard Falk.
