DD's dance friends loved the cupcakes yay, thanks for posting the recipe JustaMum :):)

They'll be asked for so often that pretty soon you'll be making them without having to refer to the recipe!

Here's hoping! They were so easy to make and I can see that you could do all kinds of experimentation with different flavours, I fancy putting some ground almonds in next time, yum yum.

Hi Sue - blog duly bookmarked :) Thank you!

I think I need to make up a little wallet card to be able to quickly tell friends who ask oh but how will you get calcium / vitamin whatever and whatever?! When I've been talking about it, people have been saying oh but you won't get enough calcium without milk.......and you'll be lacking in whatever in a week or so...yawn.

    Hi Kitikins,
Thanks for bookmarking blog, at least I assume you mean me (i'm Sandra, not Sue!) I suggest you read Plant based nutrition by Stephen Walsh, this will help you get all your nutrients and answer those questions. I have read it twice and posted a summary of the book this week including the pitfalls on my blog, worth reading. Stephen has been helpful in answering all my emails to query that I didn't quite understand, making it even better.

Also the vegan society do some free leaflets which are worth carrying with you, that help you answer those awkward questions.

Oops, I'm a bit 'dyslexic' with names, see one thing and think another.....yes, thank you SANDRA!! :):) Great link to the vegan society.

I had some amazing basil-flavoured tofu from Waitro$e with a big salad at lunch today, I'm amazed I didn't eat the whole packet in one go!

I also saw that H0lland & Barrett have a "milk chocolate" non-dairy egg, so DD can have her Smartie$ egg and I can have that. I don't mind plain chocolate but do like a more creamy flavour...

DD and I went to a Fairtrade fair in the local town today and I had a few sips of scrummy vegan wine that are hopefully on sale in my village C00p supermarket :) Chatting to the girl handing out samples of different FT products, I was a bit shocked that she told me that she'd been vegetarian for years but had recently gone back to eating meat and said that it all depended on the animals being raised and killed ethically. Errr.....has she done even basic googling?? I agree that if people are going to choose to eat meat, they should choose "friendly" (ha!) meat, but to kid yourself that the animals die with a smile on their face is completely delusional.....*sigh*

I also love marmite and that's packed full of good stuff isn't it (shame about all the salt but you can't have everything, lol).

You can buy reduced salt yeast extract in H&B and other health food stores:

IIRC it is a serious reduction in salt on the branded stuff too.

It annoys me as until recently I have been hugely overweight and noone said oh, you're obviously overdosing on calcium in all that chocolate, yet now I'm making my own personal conscious decision to change my lifestyle, everyone feels they can stick their oar in and be rude to me!!

S*d 'em, I'm not asking anyone else to join me, and it will be entirely up to DD if she wants to put soya milk on her cereal, she doesn't realise but she's been having a mixture of the soya/cow's milk all week, so she's quietly on her way...

You might want to ask your sceptical friends how they think humans survived for calcium before we domesticated cattle, or how Asian people, for whom dairy has never formed part of their traditional diet, manage.

There's calcium in plenty of other foods - pulses, green leafy veg, etc.

It's a sad fact that vegetarians and vegans do come in for a huge amount of rudeness and ignorance from meat-eaters.

Never mind, Kittikins, good on you!
Life is not a dress rehearsal.

Ooooh, thanks for the link to the low-salt marmite...hope it tastes as good as the real McCoy, I'm such a traditional gal at heart, lol.

Good thinking Saving, I'd not thought about those replies, thank you :)

I've tried that basil tofu years ago and it lovely. Shame they don't sell it in holland and barrrett. Seems to be only sold in independent stores and waitrose. I wish I know how to make plain tofu, basil flavoured like that, would be cheaper too.

Yes those milk choc non dairy eggs do look tempting. The price just puts me off. They should at least put something inside for the price they charge for easter eggs shouldnt' they. Hopefully they may reduce any thats left and then i'll buy one or they do the buy one get one half price again. I see they got them, just after that had finished!!

It always amazes me when people go back to eating meat, but I guess not all people are veggie or vegan for ethical reasons, as there is lots of other reasons, like health, environment, religion, and just because some famous person that you admire is veggie, some people try it!

    Yorkshire Puddings

    3 oz (85g) white fat
4 oz (115g) self raising flour
    pinch salt (fine)
½ pint (280 ml) soya milk
2 oz (55g) whole egg replacer

    1. Preheat the oven to highest temp, 220°C/425°F/Gas Mark 7.
    2. Put 1 tsp fat in each compartment on a bun tray with 12 compartments. Put the tray near the top of the oven with a baking tray underneath to catch drips.
    3. Mix the flour and salt with a hand whisk very thoroughly. Mix the egg replacer into a smooth paste with about 2 fluid ounces/60 ml of water. Mix this in with the milk in a jug.
    4. Once it is ready to go in the oven i.e when the oven and fat are very hot (this will take at least 10 mins) add half of the liquid to the dry mix. Mix it into a smooth batter (paste) then add the remaining liquid. It should be like cream, if it’s too thick add more liquid.
    5. Transfer the batter to a jug and fill each compartment to the top. It should sizzle as it goes in. Do this as quickly as possible before the heat gets out. Cook for 15-20 mins.

I finally got round to trying this recipe today - fan-bloomin-tastic :T:j.

I've got a huge lever arch file of recipes which I have started to work through, and this one is definitely one to keep. In fact I told the family that we are going to have a proper Sunday dinner with roasties and yorkies every week :D. Mind you I'm going to have to think of a better centrepiece - today I made up a sachet of stuffing, mixed in a couple of tins of beans and baked it. Ok but not worth bothering with again I don't think. It's just that after about 6 hours of being in the kitchen baking I really wasn't up to creating anything fancy.

hello vegan old-stylers, excuse an intrusion, but I could really do with some help :)

I noticed you've been having a calcium discussion.

I'd read that cornmeal is a very good source, containing 350mg per 100g which is a huge 'bang for your buck'.

I sadly now can't find my linkie and other sites are giving a dissapointingly low 50mg per 100g :(

Has anyone else read the higher figure anywhere? I'm wondering if it's a special type?

Also if anyone has done any research on the very cheapest vegan calcium sources for maximum yield of calcium, then I'd be very grateful.

Hope this is the sort of thing it's ok to come on and ask :o

    Love weezl xxx
