Can you post the figure for download noise margin, and downstream line attenuation?

    http://www.skyuser.co.uk/tutorials/how_to_get_your_sky_netgear_dg934g_router_statistics.html

The stats will give an indication of how long your phone line is and a few other factors that will determine whether you'll get any benefit going for a high speed connection or just better sticking with normal ADSL services

You being 2km from the exchange could mean your phone line is 3 or 4km long by the time it snakes round the roads

Ok well i downloaded a program called routerstats47 the results were
    LINE ATT DWN = 42DB , UP = 24.5
    NOISE DWN = 11.3DB , UP = 22DB
BTW i couldnt get the stats you suggested cos i hacked into my sky router then bought my own so i could upgrade firmware etc.

with 42DB down the rough guesstimate is you won't acheive much more than 8MB whether on ADSL or ADSL2+, but you lose nothing trying I guess

With those stats you should be syncing at around 8mbps. Its possible that Sky have capped your speed due to previous problems on the line.
In my case I have a downstream attenuation of 45db and get a sync of 8191kbps with a noise margin of 9db, I'm on the mid package.
However as you are not running a Sky router then they won't be very interested in looking into the problem.
You could see if you get better results from the test socket (Under the faceplate of your master socket), which would point to poor internal wiring.

There were some initial problems with sky thats why i bought my own router a netgear 834gt which was the same sky supplied me with as they were rubbish at sorting problems out, when wrang them about 1.5 yrs ago they put you through to phase 1, then 2 ,then 3 i ended up sorting it out my self, which was disconnecting all the time, since i got my own router put the latest firware on it its been fine, i have no problems with online gaming ps3 which is wireless, i can have the pc, laptop and ps3 on and i dont have a problem at all, the only reason why im leaving sky is because i want cancel sky tv.

Where can i find my master socket and how do i test from that ?
BTW im on the mid package aswell £5 a mnth.

I know what you mean about Sky it took them 3 months and infinite phone calls to get my connection working at first.
Anyway, your master socket is normally where the line enters the premises and has a horizontally split faceplate.
You unscrew this to find the test socket underneath.
    This article gives some detail.
