I was temped to not send it back but I thought there is no reason why I shouldn't. I checked today and owed £20 so paid it!!!

Do you think that me paying early will prevent increases?

Can I set up a direct debit?

Yes you can pay by DD - ring them and ask for a form. I just pay by debit card online. Paying early will not stop increases. As long as you use the account you will see your limit rise.
