The free range chickens I have seen are only about 1.3kg, and we usually get chickens 1.8kg or 2kg because of numbers.
The free range chickens I buy are at least 2 kg, often nearer 3kg and cost around £7-£8. They have massive legs! I don't buy them in a supermarket though, but get them from my local butcher.
The FR chickens I've seen in the supermarkets are always small and expensive.0 -
Thirftmonster - that's exactly my point. we don't need meat to be the main part of the meal, which is how we can make 16 meals out of one chicken. in fact quite a few of our meals are veg-based or fish-based.
to us, animal welfare is more important than having a lot of meat.0 -
Hi all, I've emailed Lidl regarding freedom foods and free range chickens and here is the response I got, it sounds promising,
We write to you following your recent e-mail regarding Free Range Products.
We would like to advise you that at present we only have Free Range Eggs available in our stores. However we have passed your comments to our Purchasing Department to see if we could get a wider range of products in the future.

Yes. i can get 16 meals out of a chicken.......
maybe this should be moved to the rubber chicken thread (have you seen that? lots of people like me on there)
Thanks for that Beki, I've been following the rubber chicken thread and would have missed this if I hadn't popped in to check on Hugh
Your descriptions are really helpful, it makes it that much easier when you're trying to 'stretch' whatever and you have some sort of amount guidelines to get started with.0 -

That's 12 meals plus some extra stock. If I was cooking chicken portions I wouldn,t expect dh to eat more than 1 breast and I pad the roast out with stuffing, yorkies etc
i agree thriftmonster, we are a family of 2 adults and 4 children between 6mths and 8yrs. one roast chicken, does us our roast, a curry, sandwiches, chicken stock and chic and veg soup. so really goes far any scraps the cat has although scraps are rare after that lol. im the same with any meat i really stretch it, we also have alot of fish for free as my hub catches it ans we grow veg.One day I will live in a cabin in the woods0 -
totally OT here
but following on from 'betterlife'... i'm thinking of getting OH to borrow his brother's fishing equipment and sending him down the beach for a few hours... wonder if he'll catch anything? he's never been sea-fishing before.. just river!

I wish people would not take this personally. I only buy FREE RANGE although we are a small family on a pension.
If people could be bothered to read the complete thread - I was referring to someone with a larger family who posted earlier. There are large families on low incomes - people who lose jobs don't get benefits immediately - I know of some who can't afford to be choosy at all. Perhaps they should stick to eating Macdonald's and chicken dippers etc which are no doubt all made from freedom foods.
If you have a large family you will get more tax credits, which are not predicated on joblessness. Simple 'unemployment' benefits are not worth much at all.0
