ther sort lifespan doesnt bother me that much its the fact that whilst there alive there suffering ......
i always buy rspca or freerange0 -
Some people could not care less about the welfare of chickens. I do which is why I buy at least Free Range, and have cut down the amount of chicken I eat.
Interestingly (though Hugh made no mention of it) Free Range Chicken is healthier too. It has about 25% fewer calories and 10 times more Omega 3 than intensively reared birds......0 -
I think it showed tesco's in a very bad light - It was obvious they did not give two hoots about customers views. With such massive profits they could afford to sell 'freedom food' chickens for the same price as basic if they wanted!
I do not shop at tesco regularrly but will think twice about the odd time I do go.
Also had to smile this morning as the postman brought me a sainsbury's envelope with 'extra nectar points' if you buy any 'Freedom Food' chicken/pork or eggs. What Marketing powers:o
Well done sainsbury's for no longer selling battery eggs:T0 -
I hate the idea of battery chickens and eggs, but I have to say that I think Tescos are only providing what customers want. I know loads of people (including many who can afford free range or organic) who don't give two hoots about animal welfare and are only interested in the priceand I think that the majority of people are like that - Hugh FW is great, but I really think he is preaching to the converted. I think as the credit crunch bites even deeper then more and more people will buy whatever is cheapest, and sales of organic and free range will suffer, regretably.Jane
ENDIS. Employed, no disposable income or savings!0 -
It was interesting to see that the RSPCA freedom food hen were not kept in much better conditions than the value hens, Will stick to buying frre range/organic from S/B, Waitrose, Co-op or my local butcher...0

Tesco looked very bad in this programme. I know it was about Hugh's fight with Tesco, but I think he could have made the point to the featured woman on there, that if she ate less, but better quality food, she would loose a bit of weight!;) and would proably end up with more money in her purse.GC - Oct £36.17/£31
GC - Sep £35.56/£30:o

I love Hugh! I have to admit that after watching that programme last night I felt very ashamed of myself. I am never going to buy Tescos cheap chicken again! I will look out for the RSPCA logo now on all meat I buy!Lydia

What got me was the 'need' for people to eat chicken, e.g.
"We buy 2 for £5 cos I can't afford the free-range ones"
Simple - don't eat as much chicken! In 'the olden days', I'm sure a chicken wasn't a staple everyday meal item.
Makes you wonder what the lady on the programme does with her chickens, and how long they last? We can get 3 or 4 meals from 1 chicken for 2 of us.
I was also struck by the fact that, essentially, those chickens are genetically modified birds, as the strains they use are fast growing ones, so the birds are ready in 39 days (or whatever).
I was pretty appalled at Tesco, TBH. Their attitude stank, especially all the palaver over the AGM. I was pretty annoyed with the marketing lady they sent to have the interview with Hugh - he should have taken her to one of the standard chicken barns used and let her pick her way through those chickens and see what she made of it!
After the programme, my OH decided that we'll get more meat birds than the few we've got, so that we don't have to buy any chicken from any supermarket at all!0 -
I do my weekly shop at Tesco and always get annoyed about the lack of free range chicken and end up going to Sainsbury's to buy free range chicken. And then Tesco's reckon that customers don't want free range!
Also I find with Tesco's is it is quite difficult to find out how the chickens have been reared. Hugh made the point that they have a nice picture of the farmer and a spiel about welfare standards but fail to lets us know that the chicken was raised indoors!
How are we supposed to make a choice if we can't even tell what we are buying!0 -

What the label doesn't say is as important as it what it does say.
If it doesn't say Organic, it isn't, if it doesn't say Free Range it isn't, if it doesn't say RSPCA Freedom Food it isn't, if it doesn't say British it isn't etc.
All of these points are selling points so if they are (Free range etc.) then Tesco would want to make a big deal about it and draw your attention to it......0
