it's obviously a problem you're not bothered about solving, so i won't waste my time0 -
Not everybody wants to become a vegetarian.
Personally, I agree with the Tescos representative - people should not feel guilty for buying value chicken. Some people in this country are trying to live on very low incomes and do the right thing by their families.

In reply to those who suggests my large gang should eat more vegetarian meals, we actually eat vegetarian meals a couple of times a week, fish a couple of times, red meat a couple of times and chicken once a week roughly. I try to balance out things. I could eat vegetarian more often myself although as I am anemic the doctor recommends red meat as the absorption of iron from it is really good. My OH loves his meat so I have to try and please him too.
The free range chickens I have seen are only about 1.3kg, and we usually get chickens 1.8kg or 2kg because of numbers.
Don't forget family size is an issue as a family of 4 would eat only half a family or group of 8.
I saw the programme and thought it was good. I think I will write to lidl and see if they will stock freedom food chickens in the future as I could stretch to 90p extra if the size of the chicken was big enough, but I think full free range would definitely be out of my price range, as it seems to be double the price for the same amount of chicken.Penny xxx

Have you looked more than once?
I often struggle to find ones smaller than 1.8kg.0 -

I do not shop at tesco regularrly but will think twice about the odd time I do go.
I agree, the giant corporation that is Tesco did themselves no favours and although I already avoid using them as much as possible I will try to completely avoid them from now on even though they are the nearest supermarket to me and I don't drive..

What people seem to be missing is that HFW was advocating that people do not buy standard chickens (or that the welfare of them is sufficiently increased).
In an ideal world we'd all buy organic, free-range, corn-fed chickens to eat. But we can't all afford that. So, buy 1 range up from a standard bird - Freedom Foods etc.
Then see how much you can do with 1 chicken! Roast it, boil it, make stock, soup, sandwiches, curries.0 -
What others seem to be missing is that while Hugh may be correct some people, especially with large families on low income, cannot afford the next range up.
All this thread is doing is making some people feel guilty.
which people is it helping and how is it moneysaving?0 -
People should be aware of where their food comes from and how it is produced and what the consequences of that are. Food is too cheap anyway imho and Farmers are being screwed by supermarkets.
Some people are happy to eat cheap rubbish, just look at the success of McDonald's.
If you can't afford a half decent bird, don't buy one!.....0 -
IMO you seem to get denser meat on a free range bird than you do on a standard one, so in effect you're getting more for your buck. so in that way it could be considered moneysaving0

But if you buy a slightly better chicken and can get 4 or 5 meals from it, then that's moneysaving!
The OS way of using a chicken was to cook it as many ways as possible until all you had left was the skeleton!0
