But if you buy a slightly better chicken and can get 4 or 5 meals from it, then that's moneysaving!

The OS way of using a chicken was to cook it as many ways as possible until all you had left was the skeleton!

It does not matter how OS they are a large family of six will probably only get one meal out of a chicken.

really? we're a family of four, and manage to get at least 4 meals out of a chicken. occasionally 5. if we were a family of 6 that would equate to 2.66 meals. or occasionally 3.33 meals.

Well done - that is true OS money saving. Please give the details of how to do it with the weight and price of the chicken and recipes. This will be very useful to lots of people.

What others seem to be missing is that while Hugh may be correct some people, especially with large families on low income, cannot afford the next range up.

All this thread is doing is making some people feel guilty.

which people is it helping and how is it moneysaving?

Rubbish! The larger the family the larger the income and the less the cost per head per portion. It is those with smaller households who find it difficult.

It can not make anyone feel guilty - anyone who cares about the chickens did not need HFW lecturing to them in the first place. If you didn't give a ... before you shouldn't give a ... now.

I wish people would not take this personally. I only buy FREE RANGE although we are a small family on a pension.

If people could be bothered to read the complete thread - I was referring to someone with a larger family who posted earlier. There are large families on low incomes - people who lose jobs don't get benefits immediately - I know of some who can't afford to be choosy at all. Perhaps they should stick to eating Macdonald's and chicken dippers etc which are no doubt all made from freedom foods.

    oh dear. how petty

i can guarantee i'm not the only one on this board who can do it. will you be so patronising and sarcastic to someone who can make a value chicken stretch so far?

I wasn't being sarcastic. I am OS and can usually get 6 meals out of a chicken but no more. Six meals equals one meal for a family of six. You said you as a family of four get 4 meals, i.e 16 meals.

I am genuinely impressed. Please do give the details.

Yes. i can get 16 meals out of a chicken.

couldn't tell you the prices offhand. but that shouldn't matter if you can still get the 16 meals out of one. you just divide the price of the chicken by 16... so whether value or free range, apply the same principle.

all meals vary, ie; we may have different meals at any one time, but an example of what i do regularly -

meal 1 - chicken and potato wedge bake (1 chicken breast and 1 leg shredded, potatoes cut into wedges and pre-baked, broccoli pre-cooked, cauliflower pre-cooked, as many carrots as you have room in the tray for pre-cooked. bung it all in a roasting tin with a little oil and seasoning, grate some cheese over and bake for 15 mins)

meal 2 - chicken and veg hotpot (1 breast of chicken shredded, lots of veg, gravy, pearl barley, all bunged in a casserole dish and sliced potatoes on top brushed with butter. bake)

meal 3 - chicken stew (the last leg shredded and added to a pan of boiled veg - lots of, and potatoes... water left in the pan. stock cubes, lentils and pearl barley all added when veg is cooking. after chicken's added cook for a further 1/2 hr. thicken. - you can also add dumplings to pad the meal out)

meal 4 - chicken and lentil soup (put the carcass and any little shreds of chicken left in a pan of water. boil. remove carcass and pick off chicken. there will be lots. add veg, stock cube, lentils and parl barley. boil for about an hour or until pearl barley's cooked. blitz with a hand blender.)

maybe this should be moved to the rubber chicken thread (have you seen that? lots of people like me on there ;) )

I'm afraid my hubby wouldn't accept that - he has to have a leg to himself at least. I can make a curry for two out of a breast but not a meal for four. We usually only have a smallish chicken about 1.5Kg.
  • In which case I think it's up to how your family views meat - is it the main part of the plate - such as a whole leg - or a tasty part of a whole meal. If I do a roast, dh has most of 1 breast less one slice which goes to ds1 with a drumstick. Ds2 has the other drumstick and I have the wings. That leaves me with 2 thighs and 1 breast as well as all the scrappy bits underneath- which will make a chicken curry for 4 with some red lentils thrown in - think dhansak- and a risotto for 4 with a bit of bacon as well using the stock.

That's 12 meals plus some extra stock. If I was cooking chicken portions I wouldn,t expect dh to eat more than 1 breast and I pad the roast out with stuffing, yorkies etc
