What got me was the 'need' for people to eat chicken, e.g.

    "We buy 2 for £5 cos I can't afford the free-range ones"

Simple - don't eat as much chicken! In 'the olden days', I'm sure a chicken wasn't a staple everyday meal item.

Makes you wonder what the lady on the programme does with her chickens, and how long they last? We can get 3 or 4 meals from 1 chicken for 2 of us.

I was also struck by the fact that, essentially, those chickens are genetically modified birds, as the strains they use are fast growing ones, so the birds are ready in 39 days (or whatever).

I was pretty appalled at Tesco, TBH. Their attitude stank, especially all the palaver over the AGM. I was pretty annoyed with the marketing lady they sent to have the interview with Hugh - he should have taken her to one of the standard chicken barns used and let her pick her way through those chickens and see what she made of it!

After the programme, my OH decided that we'll get more meat birds than the few we've got, so that we don't have to buy any chicken from any supermarket at all!

When Hugh first showed the plight of battery chickens, I wrote to Tesco to let them know of my disappointment when they seemed to actively promote these poor creatures. I received a polite reply, which in effect was a kpo.
However, at least I made my feelings known to them.

When I was young (dinosaurs roamed the earth then) chicken was a real treat, and mainly for special occasions. I can`t quite see why people feel it is necessary to eat so much intensively farmed chicken, or why they think it will do them much good - physically or spiritually.

The only way that Tesco will change is if the general public stop buying them, but in reality this is not going to happen. However, if the people that care about the cause stop shopping in Tesco for everything then maybe they will .
  • Well I do my main shop at Tesco because it is my nearest supermarket. I can then go to a small Sainsbury's in town during the week in my lunchbreaks from work, to get the chicken I want and other bits and bobs.
  • I live by the philosophy..If I can kill it then I can eat it....Therefore I have no qualms about bashing a lettuce over the head and wrenching it out of the ground!!!

Seriously, I am a veggie who keeps free range chickens and my other half is a meat eating fanatic who deals with the ''nasty'' side of livestock keeping!!!

Tescos and for that matter all supermarkets are only providing cheap meat as it is what the customer wants. I think it's unfair that they have targetted one supermarket and perhaps would have done better to target the consumer rather than the supplier......

The only way you can ever know where your meat has come from is if you raise it and kill it yourself...otherwise you are reliant on the very bendy ''organic/free range'' rules and regs which aren't quite what they say they are!!!

I have 6 in the house on a normal day and sometimes others come to tea so we could have up to 8 people for dinner, chicken fillets cost a bomb so I always try to buy a whole chicken as they are much cheaper and as I shop in Lidl I get my chickens there. We are on a tight budget. I make chicken go as far as possible and make stock with the bones, but I don't think I could afford chicken if I had to buy free range to feed all our gang. I have already switched to free range eggs so feel I do a little bit. I haven't seen the programme yet, but know it will make me feel more guilty for not being rich enough to afford free range.

My main gripe is the confusing packaging,I agreed with Hugh that the packaging was very misleading. To see a bird outside with a farmer is very confusing. They should state clearly in English where it is reared and whether it is RSPCA approved or what. Tesco's attitude was appalling, that woman was such a pre-recorded robot!

    !!!!!! is all that about?
  • For me it's not just welfare, FR/Organic taste so much better - like I remember it tasting when I was little.
Then a roast of any sort was a treat, and definitely not chicken more than twice a week (usually from one bird).
Trouble is we live in a time of excess and even some who can't really afford it try to fit that mold.
We bought a nice FR chicken the other day as a treat and will probably invite some friends over for tea as there'll be plenty.
We already do FR Eggs - locally cheaper than supermarket.

I think that is part of the problem, when we were younger a roast was once a week, at these prices people then get used to having them as a cheap meal.
