Oh lordy no! "Avinabacca" is certainly not my alter-ego. He's a big, burly, bearded rugby player, who doesn't wash up after himself and has a habit of leaving the front door unlocked when he goes off to work.

Nice fella and all that - but no!!!!

Oh, and Voice of Reason... i can't speak for bilberrycharlotte, but what i got from your post was that although *you're* not particularly pleased about lower-welfare chicken, you seem to think it's perfectly acceptable for others to eat intensively reared chicken with no thought.

No - the point's that people should always think about it! The choices they make are theirs to make - after all, it's a free country - but one hopes that they'll consider the options and issues, and then make the decision based on those.

If someone weighs up the options and then buys a two-quid chicken - well, from my point of view the intensively-farmed bird is not the best choice.

But then, they're not buying the chicken from my point of view, are they? They're buying it within their own context - and as much as one tries to educate, convince and suggest alternatives, if they've come to the conclusion that this is the all-round best outcome for them, then it's their call.

That said, it should be based on a fairly comprehensive weighing-up of the issues. Mindlessly picking the cheapest bird, or whatever, is something I'm not advocating - but then mindlessly doing anything, without at least trying to look at the issues, is something I wouldn't advocate.

  • Eh?

Did you actually read what I posted?

I said that intensive chicken farms are awful, honestly I did. As for whether one should "buy the aforementioned chicken and then waste most of it", I passed no judgement at all - I merely said that most of us come on a sliding scale somewhere between welfare consciousness and thrift, and indifference and profligacy, based on personal circumstances etc.

Go on, try having a read again. I dare you.

(Note - if you feel like you want to take another pop based on things I've never said, I'd probably take you more seriously if you didn't sound like you were preaching from a PETA leaflet after having drunk a bottle or so of wine.)
Hmmm...so if I take what you say at face value, which seems to me to be advocating not only the purchase of these poor birds which are kept in wretched conditions, but then the waste of meat from them. Personal rights and choices you say. With rights come responsibilities, have I overlooked mention of that in your post?

I don`t have a PETA leaflet, where can I get one? I rarely drink alcohol and certainly hadn`t last night. Moving that thought along a bit...had you "drunk a bottle or so" of wine when you wrote about "Personal circumatance"?
I had merely thought it was a typo and would not otherwise have mentioned it. :p

What I'm advocating is a bit of thought before people buy things. The reference to "personal circumstances" recognises that you, I, and everyone else makes their choices from a personal context.

I have not advocated the purchase of intensively-farmed chickens. Seriously. Ever.

I have, however, recognised that, if the decision that someone takes to buy an intensively-farmed chicken has been made based on a thorough weighing-up of all the issues, then it's their call. I won't agree with it - but what's the old saying? "Walk a mile in another man's shoes"? It's their choice to make! One can educate, influence and advocate as much as one wants - but that's all one can do.

As for a PETA leaflet, I daresay you'll be able to get one, should you want one, from the PETA website.

    Unsurprisingly.

    How I looked at this:

    - Tesco seemed to pass the blame on to the customers who actually eat the mass produced chicken, washing their hands of this.

I used to be a big fan of Tesco but now spend all my money at Asda, who I think(??) are equally as bad, however I was SHOCKED at how badly Tesco dealt with this issue.

I feel TESCO are 100% in the wrong when displaying "high standard" signs on their massed produced chicken and should either withdraw it or follow the freedom food standards.

The 'media' women for TESCO did far far more harm than good, we laughed at how every point she made was pathetic.

I saw Free Range chickens in Lidl last night. Think they were £3.49 per kg.

It also seems evident that people (on the HFW programmes) seem to be talking about whole chickens or raw breast meat etc. But remember that ANY product containing chicken (pies, soup, pasties etc.) will be made from Intensively reared birds unless the packaging specifically says otherwise.
