  • What I'm advocating is a bit of thought before people buy things. The reference to "personal circumstances" recognises that you, I, and everyone else makes their choices from a personal context.

I have not advocated the purchase of intensively-farmed chickens. Seriously. Ever.

I have, however, recognised that, if the decision that someone takes to buy an intensively-farmed chicken has been made based on a thorough weighing-up of all the issues, then it's their call. I won't agree with it - but what's the old saying? "Walk a mile in another man's shoes"? It's their choice to make! One can educate, influence and advocate as much as one wants - but that's all one can do.

As for a PETA leaflet, I daresay you'll be able to get one, should you want one, from the PETA website.

    Unsurprisingly.

What is not surprising? the fact that I will be able to get a leaflet from the PETA website, or the fact that I would like to look at a leaflet?

I don`t actually know what PETA is, but I will check out the website, thanks. I am currently a vegetarian and possibly will become vegan. Not because I don`t like the taste of meat, I do and was brought up to eat meat daily. In those days though you ate all parts of the animal, offal, tripe, trotters etc. I must say that for me there is nothing quite as warming on a cold day as braised oxtail and some lovely creamy mash.

I have also known reasonably hard times where I have had to try to spin out the housekeeping until next payday, so I do know what it is like to try and feed a family on very little money.

My reasons for becoming vegetarian are mainly because of the cruelty involved in farming intensively reared animals, but also partly because of additives that I am told have been added to feed for the animals.

While we are trying our best to give tasty and nutritious food to our families, I wonder if we really know what is in the stuff we are feeding them.

I saw Free Range chickens in Lidl last night. Think they were £3.49 per kg.

It also seems evident that people (on the HFW programmes) seem to be talking about whole chickens or raw breast meat etc. But remember that ANY product containing chicken (pies, soup, pasties etc.) will be made from Intensively reared birds unless the packaging specifically says otherwise.

totally agree with you! anything you buy, like quiche, or pie, or soup... even fresh pasta, mayonnaise.. the batter on a fish fillet!

it takes me twice as long to do my food shop as it used to as i'm forever checking labels and researching!!!

I remember Hugh pointing this out during the original campaign and it is VERY difficult to avoid when it comes to 'contains chicken meat' products. For Whole Chickens ad raw breast the choices are easy however when it comes to pies, soups and etc we have a VERY long way to come!

Out of interest are Turkeys intensively reared in the same fashion as Chickens?

hmmm i don't actually know the answer to that... i stopped eating turkey years ago though (unless we bought a free-range turkey at xmas) 'just incase'.

    Yes, unfortunately they are. See:

 Will have to be far more careful in what I pick up in future.

I guess it proves how important things like what Hugh has done are, I also understand that they can't go after them all.... but need to take them on one at a time!

Where do you find is the best place to buy meat??? I feel I am at a stage where it is somewhere local.......... just need to find that somehwere!

Either we cut the population (e.g. no immigration + one child policy) which I very much doubt you'll agree to or we produce food using intensive methods (something else you won't agree to).

Perhaps if you got rid of your straw man they'd be more room for the rest of us.

I am not sure about that, not eaten turkey for years, but I have seen very disturbing footage of workers at a factory (owned by a well known name) playing baseball with live turkeys as the `ball`.

Not eaten anything made by that manufacturer for longer than I haven`t eaten turkey.

I think it is always better to make your own pies, soups, curries etc then you know exactly what goes in. If you are reasonably well organised you can make double and freeze one lot for emergencies/lazy days.

There are some smashing recipes on these fora and good advice on how to freeze stuff.

I know Beki, it beggars belief that any human being could treat any living thing in that way.
