Thanks. I think I now understand. So basically I continue to pay BT the £29.99 for line rental but I pay AOL for calls which are included in the £6.99 broadband package. Assume that is only evening and weekend calls though. How can I find out how much AOL will charge for 0845 and 0870 numbers? Will 0800 numbers still be free with AOL? Can the 2 chargeable calls just be for a minute each or something? If you make 2 chargeable calls per month via BT, the service is free. I can do this using 1280 prefix. In some exchanges you're not able to access 1280. If you're not able to dial out using 1280, there's a cheaper way to get the service using a BT chargecard. Details about this are on the Home phones forum.
From BT website
* BT Privacy helps stop unwanted sales calls by registering you with the Telephone Preference Service and giving you BT Caller Display at no extra charge. From 1st October 2006, customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT Caller Display. Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost if the following calls are made. Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, other wise BT reserves the right to charge £2.50 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £7.50 a quarter. If you do not currently make calls with BT and would like to start making your calls with us again, please call 0800 121 8088. Alternatively, if you'd like to make one-off calls that are chargeable to your BT bill then simply dial the numbers 1280 before you dial the phone number you wish to call.Ellie

AOL Talk covers all local and national calls at any time. As BT charge as soon as you are connected, the calls can last seconds. I usually phone an answering machine when I know the person isn't there. You can get the call charges for 0845 and 0870 from the AOL website, though I've got to admit that I've always managed to find a national number from saynoto0870, or I've gone via BT at weekends, when it's free.Thanks. Just rang. Wouldnt budge from £14.99 per month. Said it was down to us being in an expensive area for broadband as BT havent upgraded the exchange. Offered me unlimited calls for £14.99 so I said I was thinking of looking elsewhere and requested phone number for cancellations, which he gave me.
Now wot? My BT contract runs out 27th April. Do I look elsewhere? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.Ellie

I had to phone twice to get the deal and actually asked for MAC. A couple of my friends and relatives have since got the deal by saying I was getting it. If you PM me Ellie, I'll give you my aol username.0

Rang again asked for MAC code. Got transferred to Ireland where they told me I would receive code within 5 days by email. Told them I was switching to TalkTalk for £6.49 a month. No interest in maintaining my business at all.Ellie

Thats what happened to me. A couple of weeks later I got an email from them offering me free calls and a wireless router for £12.99 a month.
I would do nothing for a month and see what happens.....you can always ask for another MAC code if they don't offer you anything.
Just seen your BT contract runs out on 27th April but I do not understand what that's got to do with it.0 -

Because AOL Broadband and Talk Talk are owned by the same company - The Carphone Warehouse. Your business has not been lost, you have simply transferred your business from one department to another.0
