Is there any way I can find out if AOL own the equipment in my exchange?

thanks for suggesting to phone them up - I'm due to move at the end of the month, was going to cancel (was on £17.99 silver) and they dropped me to a maximum of £12.99 and up to 8meg instead of 2meg, negotiable once the housemoves in place (I have no contract period so can cancel when I move if it's not a good deal. She said would more than likely be £9.99 but she didn't want to commit incase the lines aren't right in the new place) and a free month to cover the move! Thanks OP!

OMG thank you soooo much, I've also stupidly been paying £24.99 for a long time. I looked into o2 a while ago but was too lazy to ring for my MAC code but after reading this I've rung them and I'm now paying £6.99 a month for the same package with free AOL talk and router

Has anyone else noticed that since The Carphone Warehouse deal the speeds have dropped especially during peak times? Mine has dropped from being 7.6MB at all times to around 5Mb of peak and as low as 500K during peak times. I've been with AOL for around 10 years and I'm paying £9.99 for up to 8MB broadband. Will they drop the price if I ring them to cancel and are they starting to throttle download speeds? If they are I'm off to find myself a new ISP.

They throttle speed due to capacity issues, most ISP's do it.
  • I'm a million miles from my exchange but have a superb quality line..

My AOL connection is 9.99 unlimited (i typically download 50-80Gb per month) - none of this 10Gb crap!

Due to the distance I can only sync at about 4Mb (neighbours are around 3Mb) and I get throughput of 3.2 - 3.8 all day long no matter what..

I'm a very happy AOL customer! Most of the 'bashers' have only read on the net that they're crap!
  • We're also paying £24.99 a month for AOL. Got no idea what package we're on. Hubby tried last year to get the price down, but was put off by the bloke telling him that we would lose speed and download times. Frankly, it's all very baffling!

How do we know what 'speed' we're on currently? And, whats all this download capping? What would we download? We might buy a song off itunes maybe once every couple of months ... I do some 'uploading' (pictures, shop & scan transmissions, occasionally a CD into itunes library on the laptop). I dont know if this would affect the download speeds at all?

I have checked www.samknows.com/broadband/faq but it's all still way over my head! Looks like we have lots of choice though ...

I have been on AOL 2Mb £14.99 package for ages. If I try to reduce my costs will I have to take the AOL telephone package as well?
I use 18185 and was told by AOL that I could not use it with the AOL trlephone package. As I call US all the time I need to be able to stay with 18185.
    Any thoughts much appreciated

Fed up paying £17.99 per month for AOL Silver. Rang them only yesterday and told them I couldn't accept their offer because I was tied into SKYTALK for another year but could they do anything for me. Told them I was very tempted to move to SKYBROADBAND because it was so much cheaper. They offered me a reduction to £12.99 for the same package plus a new modem free of charge. I was happy to accept the offer. Just waiting for the confirmation & modem to arrive.

I took the AOL talk package and can still access 18185,1899 etc. I think it depends on your exchange, but I don't know how you find this out before swapping. Maybe a clever person on the phone board might be able to tell you. If you read through this thread, there are some people who were offered £9.99 without AOL talk. That was what I had been on for 2 years before I swapped to the £6.99 deal..At that time , a few of my relatives and friends phoned, saying what I was paying, and got their payments reduced.
The £6.99 deal has been great for me.
Perseverance pays off with them. Don't give up. I think you can get Plusnet for £5.99 a month now if you just want broadband.
