in order for it to be a theft, you have to intend to permanently deprive them of something, so you would, in my opinion need to leave the store.

in this case, they've refused to serve you, and obviously think you've got something in your bag. despite having no evidence to back this up.

    complain.

also, if you decide to shop there again, I would make a point of using your own bag to pack things in. keep them on their toes.

or fill a trolley, and leave it for the manager to unpack. or ask her to check the price of every item in it.

like you say, idiot with "Power".

I wonder if you could get a copy of the tape of the store for £10 under the data protection act?

lucky you didn't have any undies in there though!
its sad, but its always the way , people in these types of jobs , with a tiny bit of power over a few people in one store..goes to their head

it's not even that much power/responsibility, but still, give idiots any power, snd that's too much

JAG, it's near pcworld/currys etc and the gym as said, she may well have come to her conclusions upon seeing me with a big bag.

BUt without any proof/seeing me do something wrong, her thoughts are invalid. For the matter to be pursued she would need to have seen me commit an offence, assuming someone has or intends to is ridiculous.

I think people are just suspicious of men with bags nowadays to be honest

Maybe they thought you were a Terry wrist :p;)

Can just imagine your gym bag exploding casting sweaty gym clothes all over :rotfl:

I guess this woman will learn the hard way, as there are plenty of people up and down the country, who don't care about their actions. i.e. the 14/15 yr olds in Liverpool roaming streets with guns, oneday she will do it to the wrong person-but not my problem:)

The supermarket is on private land so the only thing she could have done if she thought you had stolen items from the store was to ask you to empty the bag. She or any other staff member wouldn't have had to actually seen you put things in the bag but there is nothing to stop her requesting you to empty the bag on suspicion of theft.

She couldn't demand that you did this, and I doubt she would have called the Police because no one could prove an offense had taken place.

I would write a letter to the head office because unless they have a policy about customers bringing large bags instore then you deserve some compensation for your embarassment.
  • I would do more than threaten to go to the papers - surely your local papers would be interested in this?

My understanding is that anyone undertaking this sort of "security work" adn tjhat is stopping you, keeping you, and making you turn out your bag is that they have to be regiustered by the SIA ( security industry authority)

Look next time you go shopping, every security guard MUST be clearly displaying thier SIA badge ( either clipped on, or on a lanyard)

i personally if I were you, be tempted to phone the SIA, as someone is undertaking security work without displaying an SIA license. It is an offence under the Act.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind

I think on private property the manager and other sales assitants can stop you and ask (request to you) to look in your bag. As long as they do not stop you from leaving the store (which they didn't do in this case).
