When it comes to DVD Recorders, there is always very heated discussions on which is best make or disc format....Just look on any other forum where these are discussed.

The trouble with most of these cheap chinese recorders is the poor sound quality, which is only noticeable when played through a top quality audio system.

I have always had Philips recorders, and the sound has been top notch :D
The early Philips models had problems but the more recent ones do not share same issues.

Personally I would never buy Panasonic or DVD-RAM, or DVD-R recorder. :D

The Sony DVD/HDD recorders with Freeview have poor tuners which cannot match the reception of a Humax PVR.

All manufacturers models have some problems.

Just buy the one you like.

<<<<<<<<<If you want a Hard drive then get a Panasonic or Pioneer or a named brand of some sort.>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I got a TARGA Hard-Drive/DVD Recorder from Lidl a couple of months ago. However, it is in fact made by LITEON. Moreover, LITEON manufacture for SONY.

So 'Named brands" arent necessarily what they seem

The 'Chilli' 160GB DVD recorder on MAPLINS is the exact same model as Packard Bell and Umax produce

As I said get a branded model not the tripe you quoted.

I bought the Targa DVD player from Aldi recently which is LG on the inside, is packed with features inc. DivX, and has a 3 year warranty for less than £20. And the playback quality via component out is superb!

ME TOO & it is a great bit of kit, but Panny, sony don't do a Divx.

You have no idea about what a good DVD recorder is. All philips products have reliability problems (I found out the hard way). The new philips DVD recorders have many problems. Panasonic are ultra reliable. Also as Panasonic are the biggest selling DVD recorders in the world that makes DVD-RAM also the biggest.

If freeview is not important to people (maybe they record from SKY) then OK but if you use the built in tuner it is only any use for TVs that are not widescreen as the ratio is incorrect for modern TVs.
    Nice to save.

Chase play - This is where you set a program to record but can start watching it before it has finished recording.

Isn't that the same as 'Time Shift'?

Maybe I meant Time shift ...here are the definitions from en.wikipedia.org

Chase Play is a timeshifting facility of DVD-RAM DVD recorders and many Personal video recorders. It allows a user to simultaneously watch, stop or pause live television whilst continuing to record a programme to its conclusion. Imagine watching television when all of a sudden the telephone rings. Initiating 'Chase Play' means that the user no longer has to wait until the show is over before finding out what they have missed. When returning from the interruption, 'Chase Play' allows the user to start viewing the programme from precisely where they left off. The recording device will continue to capture the programme in 'real time' until instructed to stop.

Time shifting is the recording of television shows to some storage medium to be viewed at a time more convenient to the consumer. Time shifting is usually done with a video cassette recorder (VCR) and its timer function, when the VCR tunes into the appropriate station and records the show onto video tape. In recent years, the advent of the digital personal video recorder (PVR) has made time shifting easier, by recording shows onto a hard disk and using a program guide. A digital PVR also brings new possibilities for time shifting, as it is possible to start watching the recorded show from the beginning even if the recording is not yet complete. The Sky Plus service in the UK allows you to timeshift. TiVo, DirecTV and other US cable or satellite subscription services offer PVR set top boxes, often for an additional monthly fee.

I can't remember which it is that the Humax 9200 can't do - but I think that you can't start watching a program you have set to record until it has finished! So from the above I don't think the Humax can Time Shift!

My Philips HDRW720 seems OK and it's had plenty of use...

I agree that the earlier Philips units had a bad reputation for drive failures, it was something to do with the mounting of the lasers and the cement used. They are supposed to have fixed this now, but only time will tell.

The good thing about the newer Philips units is that they use a standard IDE PC drive - spare Philips drives can be easily sourced and fitted by removing the bare chassis from the standard 5.25" casing. The drawer front is a straight swap.

With the advent of HDD based machines, as far as I can see DVD-RAM is no longer important - the HDD provides far more flexibility.

Are you trying to say that because Panasonic are the biggest selling DVD recorders out there then they are the best??? If you are then:

You are kidding me - lol

By these views then Tesco sell the best food because they are the biggest suppermarket out there, and Currys/Comet are the best place to by electronics - lol

If your not, then cool, I think this unit is great.

And for the OP - there were 280 in stock at Ebuyer last week! So quite a few have sold. And I guess thats why they put the price up too. My frined liked mine so much he bought one last week, and it was indeed £175 from Ebuyer, inc postage and VAT.
