I think I may wait until March when HD-DVD and Blueray launch. Standard DVD recorders should drop in price around then...

Personaly I bought the Panasonic DMR ES20. No hard drive but more reliable DVD-RAM. It has Freeview making recording a doddle. If you look at the spec it also records to DVD-R/W & DVD-R/+R.Another thing about the Panasonic is the 4 hour record mode. It is far supierior than any other make. I just posted 4 one hour programmes to my mate in America using the 4 hour on one disc (LP) mode & I bet he will not tell it from a normal broadcast picture unless he looks closely. Remember ultimtly most recordings end up on a DVD disc & you should want the best possible for a given length. If you want a Hard drive then get a Panasonic or Pioneer or a named brand of some sort.
    Nice to save.

Would also consider paying £50 more for a branded (panasonic) one:

This site seems a good source for dvd recorders :)

Thickie question from a newbie - so please be gentle with me!

We've got Sky - can you record directly from this or is Sky+ the only option..... which is another whole new can of worms as we only installed in September (we already have multiroom) and our "special" offer was a portable DVD player.

    Any advice gratefully received!

yes you can record sky as you can with a vcr or normal dvd recorder without hard drive. :)
    Nice to save.

DMR-EH50 That looks a great buy but it doesn't seem to have Freeview, if it does I'd buy one myself. The DMR ES20 is a great price, I paid £190-00 about 8 weeks ago, but mine it is multi region, not sure about this one.

But the ES20 has no HDD right? IMO if your gonna buy a DVD recorder why not just buy a £50 one??

Why all the complaints about Freeview? It's a completely diferent sort of device! I don't go round complaining that my radio doesn't play VHS tapes.
    Can I help?

I think going for a 'named brand' is ludicrous. Most people know that some other brands are similar or Even exactly the same. The 'Chilli' 160GB DVD recorder on MAPLINS is the exact same model as Packard Bell and Umax produce. Not similar, Exactly the same!

Of course, there is a point in going for a brand name if you like everything in your setup to 'look the same' then I can't blame you.
