no name brand, and I'd never buy from ebuyer again after they failed to deliver something which I'd paid for 2-day delivery, I subequently cancelled it and had to buy at dixons (as it was a birthday present), they delivered it a week later and billed me, and wouldn't come pick it up and refused to refund me until they had it back (at my expense!).
unless they're less shoddy now, I'd steer clear.0 -
I think the reasons having a Freeview decoder in the DVD Recorder are :
a) You can record more programs (esp. in bad channel 5 reception areas)
b) With Freeview you can get a program guide up on screen and just choose the program from the list that you want to record.
For me personally I am tempted by the Panasonic ES20 - because it will replace my DVD player, VCR recorder and Freeview box all in one (1 remote instead of 3!). I did venture into the PVR market (ALDI 101 and Fusion 200) but ran into reliability problems before I even got going.
This one is definitely multi-region

IMHO...
...I've found that a lot of "no name" stuff is actually BETTER spec than the big-name stuff. A few years ago brands like LG, Acer and LiteOn were unknown but through pushing their brands the quality of their products has become well known.
Now that's not to say that ALL they produce is great - but equally I've had rubbish stuff with Sony or Canon or Brother stamped on it. Equally I've had poor service from the big-brands too.
Most of this kind of thing is built from commodity components which are all much-of-a-muchness. The big brands are more likely to use things that are custom made to their spec. whereas, for example, in the LG RH7500 that I played around with a few weeks back, you can swap out the internal 80Gb Maxtor hard-drive for a bog-standard 160Gb one in future and it just works. It was also multi-region out of the box despite being labelled region 2 on the side.
I bought the Targa DVD player from Aldi recently which is LG on the inside, is packed with features inc. DivX, and has a 3 year warranty for less than £20. And the playback quality via component out is superb!
Freeview? Yes advantageous if you will use that - but the minute you add Sky or cable, you lose the ability to change channel. Only way round that (with variable levels of success) is to use a Media Centre PC which will cost you much more than this thing.
Agree that eBuyer service is variable and can be poor... but doesn't mean the product is bad.The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster!

We have the Humax PVR 9200T, it does everything we need and as well as being able to get rid of the video and sky box it saves us £23.00 per month on rip off sky. The only thing it doesn't have is the facility to record onto a DVD but as you have such a big hard drive we do not find this a problem.
I think that we are actually able to record two things at once and watch normal terrestrial channels too.
If you want to take anything off that you have recorded, you can link it up to the pc and do it that way and then burn to a DVD from there.
Any questions, please ask!

Two points
1. This was described as the Ultimate DVD Recorder which is a very subjective description and many people thought that to have that title it needs to have freeview tuner(s) over the analogue one.
2. This DVD recorder has an analogue tuner to receive television channels and therefore it is not a completely different device. I would expect most people to be thinking about freeview capability over analogue at this sort of price point.

Read up more on the Panasonics with built in Freeview, they have a lot of bad reviews. I know some people will pick up small things that others don't find a problem but when I looked into it I just found fault after fault. I even called Panasonic and they admitted that they had problems with them, reckoned that they done an over the air update to improve them but I don't think that this solved all the issues they had.
Seems one of the best DivX players is the Sigmatek. Without Sky the set up of the Humax PVR and a DivX does practically all we need!0 -

I've had one of those for a couple of months now, and it's great, I can recommend it!No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -

It seems to me there is no ideal (or ultimate) at the moment sub £300... though everyone knows what it should be (DVD recorder/freeview/HD and reliable!). Whilst the Humax 9200 has good reviews ...and you say it does everything you need... it still doesn't do chase play. Now you may say you don't 'need' this - but I bet it's a feature that once you have it you do think you 'need' it.0 -
I must be missing some obvious technical difficulty here - given that you can get a digibox that hardly takes up any space for less than £30, why not just get 2 of them & connect one to a cheapie recorder? It seems to me that as things are at the moment, you pay through the nose to have a digital tuner built in to a DVD recorder. Of course, things will soon change, but if you really want a stop-gap solution isn't that feasible?0

I just love to post finds on MSE with a controversial title and watch with great amusement the following comments.
Hey, this is not 'Advertising Standards' realm - it is just for information that will lead to some people benefitting from my finds.
As stated, this is a DVD RECORDER with a hell of a lot of facilities for the price. It has great reviews and Ebuyer are not that bad IMHO. I have had little to complain about, re service.
Sure, no freeview but it doesn't include a VHS Either. Or connectivity to PCs, or a card slot for MP3 playback ETC ETC. I could go on.
It's a DVD Recorder!!!!!!!. And it's a GOOD price.
Must admit, when I see '8 in stock' I don't spend a great deal of time reading up on its specifications - I just post it in the hopes that someone on here will be able to take advantage of this deal before they sell out - AND with a title that'll catch the eye!
Perhaps in future you would all prefer that I spend an hour reading about the item and then post it when there is only one left? - Nope, Sorry, not the way I do things - I'll leave that to other posters.
Anyhow, congrats to all of those that were able to benefit from this post.
(Must admit tho that they aren't exaxctly 'flying away' - down to 7 now)
