There is 1 big risk with buying low priced item with high postage.

What if the item is not as expected, or you want to return? Legally the seller should refund postage, but they may well refuse. So you will end up returning something, then being refunded 99p.
    Worth being aware of

I sold a small vase to a guy in France via Ebay, and quoted up front the postage. Cheeky b***er then left a neg for the cost of the postage!

Especially annoying considering I'd used miles of bubble wrap, a heavy duty carton etc, just to protect the thing, given it's onward voyage!

Remember P&P stands for post AND PACKING... you have factor in some cost for decent packaging materials, and not least of all, your time hanging around some grotty post office!!!

I notice Ebay has a postage estimator to help work out the cost by the weight you input, but once again that doesn't include materials etc, so don't take that shortcut too literally.

So a big thumbs down to negs for postage, when it's clearly advertised.

    .

Totally agree with you- wish that ebay would make this clear to the many buyers who dispute me adding 50p for A3 padded envelopes!

How can you charge someone for "your time hanging around a grotty Post Office" ?

YOU are choosing to sell on ebay, therefor you are choosing to go to the Post Office. Sellers who make sure the buyer covers all the fee's get on my goat, if you dont want to give your money to ebay, stop bloody using it!
  • as a buyer i factor the postage into my offer, surely that makes sense, i dont care how much it costs them to send as long as it arrives in perfect condition and quickly!!
as a seller i charge whatever the going rate is for an item, or just under! but i buy padded envelopes and bubble wrap in bulk cheaply, so i dispatch quickly, well packaged , but still make money on it, and nobody complains about that!!
£5000 debt cleared thanks to MSE advice :money:

People forget that if they buy from Tesco, M&S, Argos or whoever, postage will be £2.95 - £4.95 flat, regardless of actual cost to post.

Also worth remembering that a seller that over inflates the p and p charges too much will take a loss if item gets lost en route. In that case buyer gets full payment back including post and packing, Royal Mail will however only pay out to the seller item cost plus actual p and p paid, so don't go too mad with the packing element.
