If you read my earlier response you will see I said that there are many issues regarding getting good signals.
Just to clarify a little further, for a variety of reasons many homes have loft aerials , these have been able to do a reasonable job with the old analogue signals but will not cope with the digital signals that we now get or the higher power signals that will be available after switchover.
Roof tiles, plumbing pipework etc in the loft do have an impact on the signal and you may notice on occasions how the signal can get a little 'snowy'. However they were easy for the average person to install unlike having to crawl about on the chimney and try to erect an aerial higher up on the chimney.
With digital it will be essential to to have an external aerial if you want good quality pictures. By this I also mean that you will need a good quality digital aerial. For a better explanation go to the website indicated by KAR999 above (Thanks KAR), where if you take a little time to follow some of the topics, a good explanation is given on a number of the problems and solutions that digital will bring, as an example the aerial explanation is here.http://www.ukfree.tv/fullstory.php?storyid=1107051054
At present digital signal strength is low as they run analogue and digital side by side, after analogue is switched off the signal strength will be boosted. This will not however cure the problem of aerials. You will still need to get a good quality digital aerial and it will need to be on the outside of the building.
There is just the smallest chance that someone somewhere close to the signal may get reasonable reception on their old aerial but they will be far and few between, for most of us a new aerial is the answer.
One solution is to consider freesat which is capable of home installation, put 'freesat suppliers' into your browser and find a local company and go have a chat with them about the benefits of freesat, before spending a load of money having an aerial installed. If like my mother in law in the wilds of the welsh mountains and with a tv repeater station which we can see from the garden, no matter what quality of aerial she installed, the best solution was still freesat. Remember my analogy about the orange (see earlier)!!
One last point, HD.
Getting a digital signal is one thing being able to receive pictures in HD is another. To get HD pictures will require an HD decoder, a TV being sold as 'HD Ready' is only that, it is ready to receive HD from a HD source i.e the HD decoder. This is something the retailers are not telling the public, so for the time being if you are buying DVD recorders etc ask them if they are capable of receiving a full HD signal. One giveaway is the HDMI socket that may be fitted in the back but ask the questions anyway.0 -

this will happen automatically like usual whilst your box is on standby over night
Leave the box on standby over night? How much is that costing? Hang on. This is the money saving website, isn't it?
Well, I have a cheap digibox and don't bother to leave it on standby when not in use. The EPG refreshes quite quickly once turned on.Wearing my other one today.0 -

If you can run another cable from the lnb then you can use another skybox.
I use an old Sky box - no card - to watch some channels
(Not that is is freeview mind you - that is nothing to do with Sky)0
