I'm not sure how up to date this page is, but try here:

You can (should be able to get) BBC ITV Ch4 and five on a Sky box without a Sky card.

When I originally powered mine up there was no ITV or five, but putting an old Tesco Clubcard in (yes really) lets me get ITV and I added five in "other channels" but I have lost the details for that - but it does work.

Will see if I can sort that out for you

and you should get ch4 ch5 etc in the listings

Sky adding channels that you may be missing

    sky remote select

    then find channels
hightlight FIVE press yellow store channel then select

    channel 4
    10.714

    FEC 5/6

    then find channels
hightlight ch4 press yellow to store channel then select

    ITV Various regions

    10.891H or 10.832H & 10.758V

    Symbol Rate 22.0

    then find channels
hightlight the ITV you want press yellow to store channel then select

    to view any added channels

    sky remote

Our sky subscription lapsed last year and we just use it for freeview now but still have our original expired card in the box.

Will these channels update automatically or will I have to undertake the procedure highlighted above?

    Many thanks.

And much as I hate to be pedantic (that's not true!) you use it for the free to air channels not freeview.
    Different thing altogether.

I have Sky 3 in the TV listings but it won't come up, it says I need a Sky viewing card (like Sky One asks for).

I think I read that although Sky 3 is free on Freeview but not free to air?

Trouble with adding channels is well, is that when your flicking to see what's on, you don't often think about the other channels list so never end up using them

Of the Freeview ones I miss from using the Sky box, these are the ones I feel are the most important - C4 C4+1 C5 Five US Fiver Dave Dave+1 Sky 3 Virgin 1
Apart from Dave and Virgin you can get the others if you have a viewing card in the box (doesn't have to be subscribed can be an old one) you can get one from sky http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/faqs-freesat.aspx#q3 or you can get one from a local sky installer for a few pounds cheaper sometimes or maybe try ebay etc.
