Hi gemmaj,
This is the way I make fish pie:
Ingredients:
Any fish ( I used a combination of white fish/salmon/prawns or whatever I have)
Milk
Grated cheese
Hard boiled egg
Frozen peas
Mashed potatoes
Method
Poach fish in milk
Remove fish and arrange in a deepish serving dish
Add quartered hard boiled eggs and frozen peas to the dish
Use the milk (that the fish was poached in) to make a white sauce
Add grated cheese and black pepper to the sauce and pour over the fish/eggs/peas
Top with mashed potato
Pop into a hot oven for 20 mins or until the potato is golden
Obviously you wouldn't need to poach the tinned salmon as it's already cooked.
We have an thread on making fish pie which should give you lots more recipes and ideas so I'll merge this one in with it.

Thanks everyone. it went OK but not fantastic. Next time I will avoid using tinned salmon as it all went a bit slushy.0

Hi all,
I'm a complete convert to the OS forum, though until now I've been lurking. I made some of the baked bean lasagnes yesterday and froze them, using up 3 ageing cans in my cupboard!
Now, I have about 4 tins of tuna I want to use up, and a bag of potatoes. I remember in the past when I was a poor student I often used to make a fish pie with fish, milk and egg, and mashed potato on top and it was dirt cheap but so tasty my friends used to come over just so they could scoff it. I no longer have the recipe but does anyone have something similar? The ones I find online seem to have prawns etc in and though i have some of those I want this dish to be as cheap as possible!Debt Free Nerd #3100 -
Make a white sauce with butter or margarine, flour and egg, then flake the drained tuna and mix a couple of chopped hard boiled eggs into it. You can add other things like a few cooked peas or mixed veg as well if you like, parsley (chopped) too if you have some. Don't forget to add seasoning. Top with mashed potato, and brown under the grill or in the oven. You can top with grated cheese first if you like.0

I looked in the Mega recipe thread before posting this and could not see a recipe for fish pie (unless I looked in the wrong place although I looked at Fish)
Ok - here's tonight's simple fish pie - to be served with steamed veg - (the leftovers of which will be frozen to take to work.)
Smoked cod - lightly painted with lemon infused olive oil to stop it sticking, sprinkled with mixed herbs and wrapped in foil to cook for about 20 mins in hot oven.
When done - place in oven proof dish and cover with home made white sauce (which may become cheese sauce depending how much cheese is left)
Can't decide yet whether to top with mash or pre-cooked thinly sliced potatoes.
Grated cheese for topping.
Pop under the grill till the cheese is golden and bubbling.0 -
What no eggs??
I cant do a fish pie without eggs! I like nice creamy mash on top too!0 -
If you poach the cod in milk with peppercorns and a bay leaf you can then use this as the basis for your white sauce to make it extra fishy. I agree about the eggs and mash. Sounds good though.0

going a little off topic but I was in the supermarket the other day and they had a little salmon steak reduced to about 40p and some cod for about 80p. I simmered them together lightly and then put a couple of potatoes in the fishy water and simmered until soft. Then I mashed it all up together and rolled in flour. This made fishcakes and they were the most delicious i've ever tasted... very posh with the salmon in them too!
They went such a long way and the family were fed for about £1.50!:T0 -
Hi Deleted_User,
We have a long thread on making fish pie that isn't in the Mega Index yet so I'll merge your recipe in with it.
