Well said jnd!!! It's also bad on the motorway heading to Dublin - idiots sitting at 50/60 in the fast lane and wont move over even though nothing in sight. Fraid I resirt to the inside lane frequently!0

I've said my piece on speeding but I agree with you that people in the UK seem to have no idea that overtaking lanes aren't just for staying in all the time.
Having said that, overtaking these people using the left lane can be dodgy as well as illegal. I wish they would just pull over and then people wouldn't be overtaking in the left lane at all.0 -
My tuppence worth.
The laser cameras can operate day & night & all weathers.
In the near future you will see new cameras on the roads - 2 fixed cameras a set distance apart measuring the average speed over that distance.
I believe the Newry bypass will be the first place for this to be placed as its an accident blackspot.0 -
the chief constable of durham says this jon c.Chief Constable Garvin does not consider that fixed cameras will help the quest to lower the figures.
"Speed cameras," he says, "cannot tackle the problem driver who often doesn't work, doesn't insure the vehicle, drives whilst disqualified, doesn't bother registering the vehicle at all and just seems to drive around the roads with complete impunity."0 -
I do not have any complaint about an individual in the overtaking lane who is not doing the speed limit as long as they are moving more rapidly then the other lane. I also do not have trouble with an individual hogging the overtaking lane if they are doing the speed limit, if someone behind is annoyed by this, they should go to the nearest police station and tell the officer at the desk that they were trying to break the law but registration number XXXXXXX stopped them being able to do so!
As for the cameras and their effectiveness - at the end of the day, the law is the law. The speed limits are there for a reason and it is not down to an individual to decide they should or should not be followed. So if it happens that enforcing the law results in the police making bundles of cash, maybe the public should wise up and stop darned well speeding! I personally would advocate an increase in speed cameras to catch a much higher percentage of speeders, the revenue could go to pay for the officers and technology that was purchased to do so and the excess (of which there would be alot) could go back into the force.
My only annoyance is that the system is not really representative. The safest driver in the world could get caught on the one time they speed, but many habitual speeders will be lucky enough to get nothing. Personally I would love a voulentary system which could notify set of an audible warning if I happened to get more than 5% above the speed limit, it would be so much safer than having to search endlessly for the sign as to what the limit is and monitoring your speedometer permanently!2 + 2 = 4
except for the general public when it can mean whatever they want it to.0 -

Spot on exactly what it says in the h/code .You are supposed to pull in when you overtake the car your passing no matter what speed your doing .To me this and the fact that about only 10% of the drivers in n ireland dont use indicators.talksalot its actually the driver in the outside lane you should be reporting as that can be proved .0

I am not sure you are right that it is against the law to hold the overtaking lane..... I most certainly do not recall the last time I heard of someone being given points or a fine for it....
I do not believe a speedometer could be as much as 10% wrong. You think about it, that means that your (speed limit + 10%) rule doesnt work. The guy on the upper side of the calibration would thus only need to go 1mph over the limit (as he measures it) to be caught speeding. It would follow that the safety buffer would then need to be 20%, which it is not.
Personally I have never been held up in the overtaking lane by an individual with no traffic in front..... if you have, chances are you are in the wrong. Consider:
1) No traffic anywhere nearby and you are stuck behind a guy in the outside lane - well YOU shouldnt have been in the lane either.
2) Guy pulls into the outside lane as coming up to traffic ahead but is travelling slowly - have some patience, you are approaching more traffic anyhow
3) Clearing traffic, there is someone in front not getting out of the way - a bit of patience again, maybe this person wants more clearance before they pull in
There are very few instances that you should actually find yourself stuck in this boat. So relax! Worrying about the few mph you might gain thanks to speedometer calibration is far too aggressive a view to have.
Agree with lanko about indicators.... to pass an MOT your indicators need to work, if they are intermittent, it isnt good enough! So why should an individual be allowed on the road if they are unable or unwilling to use their indicators?2 + 2 = 4

Well many years ago I was pulled over by the traffic Police for driving in the outside lane. They weren't pleased and I haven't done it since.0
