    It has been statistically proven that speed cameras are for revenue earning and little else. The do not necessarily reduce the number of accidents on the road. I'd much rather see the PSNI out looking for drink/drug drivers on fri and sat nights than collecting beans to count. Or perhaps catching joyriders? With or without doughnuts.

    I have seen mobile traps on the sydenham bypass..... middle of the day in light traffic, no pedestrians....
    Light traffic = more chance of speeding motorist;
    No pedestrians = ??? Other cars have innocent people in them, killed and maimed by speeding idiots.

    And killed and maimed by old dears driving at 25mph on a motorway!

    Bring in minimum speed limits, then I don't mind speed cameras!

    No it hasn't. Road deaths are declining and are now the lowest they've been since the 1920s when there were hardly any cars on the road. Cameras, traffic calming etc have had a part to play in this. Cameras would raise ZERO revenue if people didn't speed!

    OK. I've been driving a long time and have never seen anyone doing 25 on a motorway (other than in a traffic jam of course). There ARE minimum speed limits eg in road tunnels - but people still speed!

    I was under the impression that the police had a duty to tackle all crime, including speeding.

    Why would it be better for them to ignore speeding which is a major cause of fatal crashes, especially as many drivers who speed ARE drunk/on drugs/joyriders?

    Police with mobile cameras can do all of the above. And no, their cameras don't have to be mounted on tripods to be accurate.

    I think that this is a great exercise in who swallows the official line and who's got common sense.

    Problem with old fogeys is caused in many cases by Doctors refusing to put them off the road and taking the easy way out. Reaction times as you get older are slower and definitely cause problems on the road. Perhaps better to take it out of Doctors hands and make it compulsory to stop driving at say 75 years of age.
