    I think you've missed the point there renee.

    The numbers you quote are what, before BT had to re-write the definition to cover their own backs, most people understood to be indirect access (dial-through/gateway) numbers. You dialled the number, waited for the prompt message and then dialled your target number.

    www.my0870.com works differently by, effectively, operating in exactly the same way as normal NGNs (i.e. a specific 0870 number permanently 'pointing' at a specific target number). They then added the ability for the user to change that target number online but that's by-the-by.
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Also, who does 3C buy their blocks of numbers from? If BT pays 3C 4p per minute surely they know who owns the numbers.

    I doubt 3C will be paying for the numbers...the provider will be getting a cut of the revenue. I haven't used the service so don't know the numbers, but if you've got one and look here, the information's from row 10812 onwards.

    The provisions under which BT could refuse to pay the provider are called Artificial Inflation of Traffic. The contractual definition is;

    "any situation where Calls:

    (a) are made, generated, stimulated, and/or prolonged for the direct or indirect benefit of any entity (including a natural person) operating, hosting or otherwise connected with a telecommunication service as a result of any activity by or on behalf of such entity; and

    (b) result in a calling pattern which is disproportionate to the overall amount, duration and/or extent of Calls which would be expected from:-
    i. a good faith usage; or
    ii. an acceptable and reasonable commercial practice relating to the operation;
    of Telecommunications Systems; "

    I've no idea whether it's captured by this or not...probably not hence choking it by using the retail terms to charge for the calls.
    I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

    I have seen that BT start charging for my0870 numbers. I called BT customer and they asked me if i am using 0870 number to call abroad and they confirm it i use such a number they will be charged.
    Any one else seen similar problem
  • The numbers from my0870 dont seem to work any more. When I dial them, I hear a message these numbers are not available any more. They have also added a new column on the page where you can delete or update the allocated numbers.The heading of the column is"DIAL" and all the entries in the column are "NEVER". I really don't know what does this mean?
  • It is still working for uk mobile calls and some countries like India but doesn't work for Pakistan.

    I can confirm that calls to Pakistan are no longer working via my0870.com.

    Does anybody know of a similar site that allows routing of a number from Pakistan to an 0845 or 0870 free of charge?

    3C can only offer the my0870 service to places and at times when the revenue they collect from BT (probably around 4p a minute daytimes, much less evenings and weekends) more than covers the cost to them of forwarding the call. Apparently that is currently 'never' to Pakistan. Oddly, it currently also seems to be 'never' to Virgin mobiles (07981); don't know about other T-mobiles.

    Exactly! The Pakistan Telecommunication Company has increased the call termination charges and thats why call tariffs to Pakistan have been on rise lately.

    my0870.com can introduce a system where we could top up our account online with a certain amount of money and they can charge us the money which they fall short in our case. I would be happy to pay 2-3 p per minute if I can use my0870 service to dial Pakistan, because 6p a minute is the best which I can get from any other reliable service.

    I agree with you mary. I have have used my0870 twice. The first number was charged but BT refunded the £1.40 when I complained. The second number was not charged. However rule 2 clearly shows BT intend to charge for these calls so let's enjoy them while we can.
    p.s. Just had a terrible thought: Could BT, in say 6 months' time, apply retrospective charges?

    Yes I was wondering that as well... could BT charge me later on?
