Hello Folks
Came across www.my0870.com which allows you to map an international number to an 0870 number, so when you call the 0870 number you get through straightaway. Its a bit like when you call a bank in the UK on 0870 which is then mapped onto the geo number. AFAIK this is not an indirect access code, so should not be charged by BT. I have made a number of calls overseas (and UK mobiles) using numbers from this website and so far BT has not charged me for these...i am on the Anytime call package. You can make calls to UK mobiles and most international landlines/mobiles through the 0870 number you are allocated, though there are time restrictions for some countries (Mon to Fri 8am-6pm). You have to register with the website and then you can allocate 0870 numbers for up to 5 numbers of your choice. More details can be found at:

Hope this helps
PS I am not in any way connected to www.my0870.com, i am only posting my experience

Interesting. I popped my mobile number in the checking box provided, and it said I couldn't set up an 0870 number to divert to it. Then I tried my partner's, and it said I could. Thing is, we are both with the same mobile company (Virgin) and our numbers differ only by the final digit. Wonder what's going on here?

It's of no use to Virgin Media customers of course (their exorbitant 0870 rates should be avoided at all costs).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
i c can sometime tell me we have a talktalk package but pay bt line rental does that mean i can dial 1280 before the call and it would be free or do i need to be on some kind of package?????
martins article isnt clear it talks about calling one person to get free evening and weekends which isnt good as the 0870 number i have can only be used mon to fri to 6pm any help0 -
Be interested to see how long this lasts...the amount that terminating 0870 networks receive from BT will be reduced as part of them being included in BT's packages, so there probably won't be enough money to support it for long.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0

In any case, it sounds like you are talking about an indirect access/dial through/gateway calls provider's number - which are specifically excluded from the BT free 0845/0870 calls change and which www.my0870.com, has clearly been set up to sidestep.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market.
