This is pure economics, I work for a US IT Company, in England, and we are regularly shifting work from the UK(EU) to India and Brazil - why; not because we don't have the skills to do the work here, but because it is cheaper there and they have the same skills.

At the end of the day we have to accept that we brought it on ourselves with our constant desire for everyone to earn a fortune and own their own house/car, tv in every room etc.

The world turns, and gradually these other places become more expensive as they price themselves out of the market, maybe by then we will accept that we can't price ourselves out of the market as well and will gains some of the work back again, but in the meantime we are facing difficult times.

You need to buy a new dictionary. If there is a word for ignoring starving Africans (or starving anyone else for that matter) it would be something like Don't-give-a-eff-ism or something like that.

I'm a very keen believer in Capitalism and also don't believe people should starve.

Well the UK has one difference when comparing with African politics....you don't have competing tribes.

Just ask the Scots, Welsh, Lancastrians and Yorkists. Nobody mention Northern Ireland as those Gentlepeople have put their differences behind them thankfully.

You are confusing (deliberately?) Nationalism with Tribalism. Reading some of info from UNHCR about Somalia may expose the reality. In Somalia tribalism is not based on religion or ethinic origin, it is based on family and ancient bias about work trades and slavery. All very nasty and nothing what so ever to do with UK world view.

This is an outline of where the EU is heading. No longer will corporations need to re-locate to find the cheapest labour. Now it can put jobs out, supported by EU directives, to a dutch auction. As the available (out of work) swells in numbers wages will be put in a ever downward motion. This will put worker against worker and leave the corporate to sit back a pick those that are willing to settle for transportation costs and room&board on a barge. Better to eat and work in a foreign land than starve at home. Distrust and resentment between different nations workers will grow again giving more power to corporate hierarchy. Divide and control.

Ok, I was trying to make light of a very nasty politick.

So what to do now? 200 y/o ideas about slavery aren't going to sort Africa out and frankly most of the big arguments seem to be over property. What can the UK/US/EU do about Africa from an ex-colonist's POV?

We can say , "Well I wouldn't start from here" and blame it all on people who are long dead but that doesn't help.

Africa is a massive eff-up and only African people will be able to sort it out in the end I believe just as Europe's problems have been resolved (so far) by Europeans. Someone from Paris can no more impose a solution on a person from Cape Town than a Cape Townianistarian can impose a solution on a Londonist.
