    Hi carli :)

I've added your question onto an older thread that has quite a few good ideas in it, but you'll need to read from the beginning again to catch up :)

Did you know that the maximum speed for a housefly is 5mph - just faster than walking pace and that they actually take off by flying backwards? Unfortunately no-one has informed the flies of this phenomenon; therefore they still evade the rolled newspaper, no matter how swiftly applied and are at the other side of the room while we are yet bruising our shins on the furniture.
  • I have 2 huge flies flying around right now. They have been driving me crazy for days. So need to try some of these tips.

I have a problem with flies in my loft. I live in the countryside and the loft is quite large. When I last went up there I found hundreds dead on the floor & hundreds more were trying to get out of the window. I don't know why they are there (unless it's from birds nesting within the tiles) but I hate them. I did a huge squirt of fly killer & the next week swept them all up (yuk) only to go back 2 weeks later to loads more (all dead) on the floor. Have done another spray, but don't really want to be going up there all the time.

Thinking of getting an electric uv zapper, but am not sure if it is safe to leave on all the time in the loft. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
  • If you're the only house in a wide area, then that is likely to continue. We had a similar problem, the flies came up under the slates, died then the mice got to them - result - lots of wings on the floor, but no bodies:eek:

The only thing that worked was to board out and seal the loft walls and ceiling completely with plywood and put fine mesh over the inside of all the air bricks. Hard work initially, but stuff stayed clean once it went up there.

Thanks Brambleberry. I have got neighbours as I live in a close, but fields and forest are just behind us along with ditches that are alive with little vampires! Loft is boarded out, but not the tiled roof so guess they come in to hibernate over winter (rent free) and I will have to investigate the mesh thing. Might buy some of that flyscreen material which I've seen in the pound shop. 2 years ago wasps drilled through and made a nest up there. I live in Germany now and my next door neighbour gets a marder (think it's a pine marten) coming to stay in their loft every year which is nocturnal and very noisy. The joys of country living!!
