I actually sat in my mothers kitchen last week with her slotted fish slice thingy and spent a happy hour batting anything that came into range -- good for releasing all that pent up fustration. :D

cant think of the top of my head, but there are herbs that flies dont like that you could have in pots by the door or windows to stop them coming in in the first place.........if thats any help. or those (rather ugly) things you hang over the door, like long ribbons.

when I was in Turkey they had pots of mint growing on the tables to deter flies but I have tried it in my garden and also in pots and doesn't seem to work that well.
The only real solution I find is keeping my windows and doors shut.I bought a fly screen for my patio doors but there are always some sneak past.i would probably have been better putting one over a window and leaving that open.

I love using swatters - boyf's parents house is in the middle of the country side and gets plagued by flies every year. I find it excellent fun swatting them - and you get professional pretty quick!! Im quick enough now to get them on the first swipe... as is boyf! I particularly love back handing them - I can hear them coming, swipe over my head backwards - and then hearing a satisfying THWACK!!

    Love it!

If you have one odd fly buzzing about then shut all doors and windows and shut the curtains so that the room is dark. Then open a window and pull back the curtain a bit. The light streaming in attracts the fly and it goes straight out!!! Otherwise I use an old tea towel. Hold a corner and really smack the fly hard and quick. You have to do it as though you are really angry otherwise you wont be quick enough!

Once we're into wasp season I hang a jam jar outside by the back door with jam and pop etc in it and have the lid on with holes punched in it. When Im cooking, this attracts the wasps but most of them go into the jar instead of into the kitchen. The flies make for it too.

There seem to be alot of flies around in my flat at the moment! I reckon one of my neighbours must be aiming for "How Clean is your House?" or something. Do any of you lot know of any ways of keeping the little buggers out of my flat?

    Thankies.

    Try these two threads:-

    swarms of flies

    fly killer

Alternatively you could use net curtains on windows you like to keep open or even fitted flyscreens from FlyScreenQueen

The only way I know to properly get rid of flies is to screen the windows. It's fly city here in summer. I don't like using sprays, I just get the odd one in and I use the fly sqat. There is a product, it's pink and we get it from the hardware shop. You place it on a old plant saucer and leave it outside. The flys are attracted to it, eat it and die. Or you could get fly papers to hang up outside.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

  • I've used the fly papers in the past and they work pretty well but I hate the gunky yellow mess they leave behind if you hang them too close to a wall, which I've had to do as I can't reach the ceilings here.

I don't seem to have had as much of a problem with them this year as usual, and a swift flick with a tea-towel has finished off a fair few, or sucked up the hoover nozzle in mid-flight :rotfl:

I can't use sprays or anything that gives off a toxic smell because of the animals I keep, or they'd all cop it too  I know that citronella oil is supposed to be useful but I've not yet checked if that's safe for me to use either, but I'm sure it would be fine for most people.
