Well I dont take supplements as a rule but I have soluble vitamin C weirdly as I take it after long runs to help with iron absorption so I'll grab some now :D

Well I didn't get out for a run tonight because I had a late meeting in Edinburgh and I didn't get home till 9. Having said that I tried to run yesterday evening but my hips were really hurting stillfrom Sunday morning so after a mile I gave it up as a bad job and did 1KM on the cross trainer instead.

I'm going to try to run tomorrow night now

This time next week the big day will almost be here.:D:D

Another interesting point which is little known about marathon preparation is the importance of being relaxed and calm.

Since the brain is a glycogen hungry organ, estimates suggest that up to as much as 10% of all glycogen available can be used up, and therefore wasted, in the hour before the start of the race, in pure nervous tension.

This means that being nice and relaxed can delay the onset of the wall by as much as 2 miles compared to being a nervous wreck. So if this is an area of concern, practising effective relaxation techniques can be the equivalent of a chunk of additional training.

Its worth getting all the advantages you can.:D:D

Oooopppps a few people hate me on twitter now as I was telling them about the sub 35 mile per week risk and now they are in full panic - why dont people read these things before signing up for a marathon (okay so I could have phrased it better but I am ill!)

Well its hardly your fault that they haven't prepared properly!

Its up to them what they do, but all you're pointing out is scientific data which backs up what has been known for the last 40-50 years.

Who on earth is telling these people that 20mpw for a short period is fine for preparing for a marathon?

You need to be getting close to that mileage just in the preparation races to get the body toughened up, let alone for training itself.

I guess this is why the St John's Ambulance people are so incredibly busy on the day........

PS This is a direct quote from Mike Gratton who, many will know, won the London Marathon:

"Unfortunately mental power can't get you through if you have depleted completely in the race. Some people are more efficient than others in the use of energy, which may be genetic to a certain extent, but mainly developed through loads of long runs. There were plenty of runners around who could beat me over half marathon - but couldn't turn that into a good marathon."

I came across these figures for best 5km times in the UK, which are for a couple of years ago. Its interesting to see how gradual the decline is and the amazing level of performance of some of these people, eg the W60 at 21:09 stands out as being particularly impressive!
