I went on another jog today. Managed a third of a mile in about 4 minutes. Calves ache now. I'm rather disappointed as I can do the Island Lap on the Wii which is over 10 minutes but can only manage 4 minutes in real life. Am I going too fast? Also should I do some stretching exercises before I start and what exercises should I do?0

Hi Rachel!
Dont beat yourself up too much - when I started I couldnt run around the block - we ALL have to start somewhere
Dont know re: wii though sorry...
However, make sure you're going really really slowly (in fact so you feel bored if possible) 12 minute miles + is fine, definitely gentle stretches before you start - nothing too much just so the legs feel looser and flexiable and remember that progress happens slowly with running and try to keep at it - you'll notice the distance getting easier and then its time to add some more, but stick with the 4 minutes for now - it took me 2 months to get up to 5 miles!!!0 -

Sally, you have trained progressively over a number of months and have taken your long runs to 20 miles - you are well prepared.
The risks are taken by those that just fancy a run round on the day without doing any meaningful training and without understanding the strain a marathon puts on the body.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
Blackpool Marathon 11/4/2010 (Target=2:59:59) (6:52/mile)
Abingdon Marathon 17/10/2010, (Target=2:48:57) (6:27/mile)
