Nonsense, i suspect my long term average is around 30 miles a week which is more than adequate to get me round the marathons i have done. Its more a case of are they doing enough long runs at in the 35 miles a week i think. That and have they been training for 6 months or more before hand.
Managed 700 miles in 2007 with about 14 weeks off injured which is an average of 20 miles a week. 2008 was 820 miles with about erm 19 weeks off injured, christ didn't think it was that much, which is 25 miles a week roughly.
There are times when i'm busy at work so might only get out once during the week if at all but if i can its 4/5 runs a week one of which is long. Slowly building up towards 30-40 miles a week which i'm hoping will lead to a decent increase in speed. This year i've managed 290 miles so far averageing about 22 miles a week but i've lost a few weeks to being busy at work and a few colds. Actually ahead of my target of 1000 miles for the year although the unofficial one is 1250. Naturally if i have far less time off injured 1500 isn't going to be too hard to achieve espcially when a 24 hour race covers 100 miles approx.
All this warm sunny weather helps too, plus the need for a build up in mileage for the 12 hour track race which is 3.5 weeks away now.
Thats nonsense to the 35 miles a week btw.Debt free Nerd number 1122 LBM Jan 2009 Debt @ LBM £40,086.88 (14/01/09)

KMS,
What they are saying is that the risk increases significantly if attempting marathons on lower than 35 miles per week because the heart and cardiovascular system hasn't been strengthened adequately to deal with the stress of the event.
That doesn't mean you cant 'get away with it' so to speak as the risk is still small, but it is advisable to train in excess of 35 mpw anyway in terms of creating sufficient bone density to prevent lower leg injuries.
But, as is clear, the risk is very small nonetheless.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Just been looking for some more 'peer reviewed' and not wiki support for this an actually there's quite a bit of research been done on this topic, but the no. in each study is small (maybe someone could do a literature review)...anyway this study from 2006 also shows how the less than 35 miles is key, but even those below that distance completed the marathon but their heart was more at risk, over 45 miles a week this risk seems to disappear...however, tendancy for overuse injury increase a lot beyond this point from other studies so there's always a trade off - its interesting that no one has yet investigated training miles & intensity & injury as far as I can see from pub med!
