Does anybody have any advice on buying running shoes - ideally no more than £50.

Rachel, I wouldn't bother with high street sports shops unless you really know what you are looking for. They don't tend to have knowledgeable staff, especially not on Saturdays! (Yes I know there are exceptions, but as a general rule.....)

Go for a specialist running shop - is there a Sweatshop near you? Many specialist running shops advertise in Runners World, etc. Get a gait analysis, as Idio suggests. They will check whether your feet roll in as you run, and will recommend either a supportive shoe, to stabilise your running action, or a straight cushioning style. Usually there are sale shoes about, but running shoes can be very expensive. The insoles Idio mentioned are called Sorbothane, and are brilliant but quite expensive.

Most running shops will analyse your running style for you and recommend shoes accordingly. The trick is to find one that does this service and also has relatively cheap/sale shoes available.

Alternatively, you can just get some comfy shoes dead cheap (think mine were £18 or something) then slot some sorbawotsits into them to provide some more cushioning.

Sure someone else will provide a more detailed description shortly :)

    Aww I liked yours :D

Yep pretty much - get your feet measured if you want (if you feel you have an odd running style might be a good idea), try on a few pairs - run up and down street - take name of favourite pair and go and buy last years model from the internet, buy sorbathanes, remove insoles in trainers, chuck in sorb's and you're off :D:D

Hypno, I have one of those, but be warned - make sure you tighten it up enough so that it doesn't wobble about too much, or use copious amounts of vaseline. The first time I used mine for a long run (what it was bought for) it rubbed my back and I ended up with a patch of skin that was red raw. I didn't realise until I went for a shower. I nearly hit the ceiling when the hot water hit my raw skin.

Thanks for the warning, chick. Vaseline it is!

I love the way becky says "it's possibly official" - in my opinion you don't get much more official than announcing it on the world wide web :rotfl:

As for "the talk"......that's where becky makes it quite clear what she expects......and what she will do if she doesn't get her way :D

    Week31
    Mon30/3 Rest Day
    Tues31/3 Rest Day
    Weds1/4 Race: Spencers Dash 3.7 24:44 (6:41/mile)
    Thurs2/4 Rest Day
    Fri3/4 10K 58:03 (9:22/mile) (Pulse 68)

Thats the final training run done, the first training run in 7 days actually. It took the whole 6 miles to work out the inactivity stiffness, but thats no surprise during tapering week.

So 36 hours to the marathon......time for another large pasta meal and then R & R for the remainder! :D:D:D

    Have a great weekend everyone!!
