Ah, but who finished first? Presumably Lopez, or Jones would have been the official world record holder with 2:07:13, even if only briefly?
If the world record was 2:07:12, Jones didn't break it. I can be such a pedant :rotfl: I take your point that he ran a time faster than the world record was at the time he set off though.
I win! On a technicality! Go on let me have this one, you're generally right about most other things
I'm pretty sure that London started an hour earlier, but go on ...... you win on a pedantic technicality!;)Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Woohoo! I know it's a bit of a moot point, but I'll take my small victories where I can :rotfl:Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
Hi Becky, this is quite a difficult problem, as it may contravene race organising guidelines if you offer no water stations at all, especially for a race as long as a half-marathon. As far as giving out bottles goes, I'm sure you would find this makes as much of a problem, as you will find that people take one, take a few sips from it and then throw it away half-full! I know in some of the races I have done (GNR is a perfect example) there are empty bottles strewn virtually all the way round. It can make it dangerous for runners too as if the race is busy, you may not notice one on the floor until you stand on it and fall over.
I think the best solution for Bath is to fence in the drinks area to stop the cups blowing away from the road (big bin idea) and enlist lots of volunteers to help pick them up. I don't really think putting recycling points on the course will really help. When you are running, you don't really think about much else. I don't think bigger bottles is the way forward either. They will be more expensive and if I was racing I wouldn't think it appropriate to be offered a 750ml bottle to run with as its too heavy.
As far as general environmentally-friendly race ideas go, I think accessibility is by far the biggest thing. Perhaps a minibus from the railway station? It is a difficult balance, as big races like Bath generate a boost for the visitor economy, eg. people staying in hotels & B&Bs, eating out in restaurants, etc. Maybe get the hoteliers to pick the cups up? They will benefit from the increased visitors after all.Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90

Hi Chick - they did that this year at Bristol - I think the problem is mostly about the location more than anything else - i.e. the cups blow into the gorge which the council will have no option to take action about I suspect if it happens again this year...
I agree its a tough one...off to a meeting will have a think a discuss in a bit!0 -

Great stuff Webitha - That is probably faster than most people's first 5ks, it's certainly faster than mine when I started training again!
