I meant in my living memory

Logged in the back of the mind for when the training plan request comes along............:p
Btw It's surprising how many people haven't heard of Steve Jones considering he's the fastest ever British marathon runner at 2:07:13!!!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
Blackpool Marathon 11/4/2010 (Target=2:59:59) (6:52/mile)

Thanks Idio - think thats a littel harsh, but last year they all blew away before they could be cleared up so ended strewn around the gorge apparently (which is an special scientific interest area because of the perigrin falcolns that nest there) so I like the long bin idea and perhaps a warning pre race that if you dont clean up then the race organisers may get fined...
Also though they are worried about the amount of plastic cups anyway because they cant be recyled and are energy intensive to make...not sure how to help with that one though...0 -

Hah! Well, I've done some digging, Mr Smarty pants and Steve Jones broke the world record in Chicago in 1984, not in London. Though it's possible he was still the world record holder when he won London 1985, it doesn't say what date that was.
Is it possible that rich was wrong?! :eek:Remember the day, folks:rotfl:

I'm not an expert on cups, but I know plastic bags are certainly a lot less energy intensive to produce than paper ones - so this may be an issue with a switch to paper cups. Could look into the biodegradable plastic you get these days, though - is it made out of corn?
If the wind was the issue, maybe another good option is to put railings / fencing for some distance from the water stations - and make the whole area one giant bin...
Another idea I thought about, but haven't fully worked out yet, is the possibility of providing the timing chip in, say, a water bottle - so that you have to take the thing the whole way round...Not sure how refills would work though...0 -
Oooo Idio - put these down in a pm and send them to me please - my Stepdad will be well impressed (dont worry I'll give you credit)
He has to draw up some suggestions to put to the organisers before the next race in September, but they have the Bristol 10k in May so maybe they could trial some stuff there?? I think its great that he's asked me to ask you guys because it means that they are getting direct from other runners and not just 'environmental people'0 -

I'd say limit the water points to every 10K i.e. half way round in the case of a marathon. That is when people will actually start to "need" some water. Give out large-ish 500ml or 750ml bottles which can be recycled and have recycling points as idio suggested.
P.S I know you don't really "need" water until closer to 10 miles, but half way round makes sense to me...Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -

That's right - He broke the world record in Chicago in his first marathon.
He started the London as world record holder and actually ran faster at 2:07:13, thereby breaking the world record!
However, Carlos Lopez ran 2:07:12 in Rotterdam at the same time.
Therefore, Steve Jones did break the world record in London, but it never got recorded as a world record!

I've had another idea
(I'll PM these in a bit)
- How about you get some local shops to provide discounts, which could be presented as vouchers on the cups? Could even sell the advertising space to raise some cash.
If you make them light paper cups, with the adverts printed on (things people will actually want to use - half price lucozade at the shop by the finish...free sessions at the local gym etc) - a lot of people might be inclined just to screw the thing up and stick it in their pocket rather than just discard it....or not..not sure on that one0 -

Hehe
Ah, but who finished first? Presumably Lopez, or Jones would have been the official world record holder with 2:07:13, even if only briefly?
If the world record was 2:07:12, Jones didn't break it. I can be such a pedant :rotfl: I take your point that he ran a time faster than the world record was at the time he set off though.
I win! On a technicality! Go on let me have this one, you're generally right about most other thingsRunning Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0
